Any HSE Professionals In The House? (430985 Views)

kentoski: We apologise for the late reply. Please if this is open, do get in touch with us for further discussions. We will need to know which regulatory agency it is for? Whether a LOPA workshop will be held. If the LOPA is an extension of a HAZOP, HAZID, FMECA, etc. And whether you just want a LOPA Report with a low key risk assessment workshop. Please note that a LOPA Cannot be executed without a formal risk assessment. We do hope to hear from you. |

ESSOHEngineers: 8:17am On Jan 06, 2019 |
Alphaman007: Your discipline will not. We repeat, it will not. There is lot of ignorant talk especially by those from the Engineering and Physical Science Disciplines. You can even focus on Behavioural Safety and Industrial Safety Culture. These have psychology as a core. Even in NEBOSH Idip you do some introductory modules that focus on human behaviors and psychology. Especially with respect to human satisfaction and etc within industrial contexts and how this can affect productivity and accident/incident rates. And who says if you are properly taught you won't understand the basic laws of physics, chemistry, biology and maths? Hazard, Risks and Accidents do not only occur in Engineering Contexts. They even occur in Social, Economic, Political and other contexts. Various root, remote and immediately causes of accidents have proven this. Let no one deceive you with the I AM AN EGINEER useless talk. Nigerian Engineers are one of the only remaining professionals who can't even practice their trade in Nigeria without a white man supervising them. Teachers can, Doctor's do, mechanics do, etc. We are an Engineering company filled with Engineers and we understand that engineering is simply using the principles and properties of natural science to solve humanity's problems. Also, courses which were once called Science are now called Engineering to make it sound cool. Even in the social sciences, there is now Social Engineering. It has human behavioral psychology as its core foundation. However, we have seen with dismay how the word "Engineer" is used to refer to everyone and anybody accompanied by pseudo-knowledge and foolish pride. To us engineering is not just in bearing the name and claiming superior knowledge. If you an an Engineer or Natural Scientist then PROVE IT. DO SOMETHING WORTHWILE WITH IT. Not to use it as a avenue to get undue advantage at work, during promotion and at public functions. Our advice is to do the general courses first. Get acquainted with the various areas and possibilities of the profession. Then pick an area of interest to focus or improve your skill on. |

Lancarrazi: HSE: Health(occupational/industrial), Safety and Environment In some climes it is HSSE: Health, Safety, Security and Environment In other climes they add Quality to it and it Becomes QHSSE. While in other climes they even add Community Affairs, CA or C then it becomes CASSHEQ, and others such abbrevations. It is the conscious effort put into planning, implementing, monitoring and optimising operational processes to ensure freedom from accidents/incidents and to manage risks in the areas of environmental management, health protection and occupational safety by using knowledge from social/beavioural science and from physical science, mathematics and empirical evidence. This is currently a compulsory unit or area in any industrial facility or o organization. Even banks and insurance companies now keep a viable and strong HSE Department. The World Bank/IFC for Example has a strong environmental department that carries out environmental due diligence and other activities on financed projects. They ensure impacts from all financed projects are mitigated, managed and monitored. It is a young discipline and it's principles are still being formed. It is also broad because it involves a lot of sub-areas. We at ESSOH got our name from Environment Safety, Security and Occupational Health (ESSOH). However we handle matters on: C: Community Affairs Q: Quality H: Health S: Safety S: Security E: Environment From a managerial/human/beavioural science and physcial science/engineering points of view. This approach is used for our consultancy service, training service and public HSE advocacy. |

benefe: Kindly do your proper due diligence before you enroll for any course. Check ratings and past track record before you enroll. Also claims of endorsement and approvals from international bodies and local authorities before you do. That a company splashes logos of all international bodies does not mean it is endorsed. That is called hoodwinking. If they claim they are endorsed by DPR, let them give you their DPR license number so you on DPRs website. If they claim NEBOSH go to Nebosh website and scroll to approved trainers in Africa /Nigeria and search if their name is there. If they claim ISPON, call ISPON and ask. etc. Etc. Do actual verifications. Not just by reading what they claim they are. If they make a claim, it must be proven before you part with your hard earned money. Also, ask for their curriculum. This should be free of charge. See their modules then ask more experienced people on their opinion. There are a lot of companies tricking, especially young graduates and Corps , on HSE And how they are the next best thing. The above and more are necessary. Good luck. |

enemerci: This is not a problem. There is no rule that says you must do HSE Levels 1,2,3 before NEBOSH. It is only encouraged. Basic HSE gives you an idea of what you want to go into at the NEBOSH stage. The NEBOSH curriculum is more intense and broader then HSE Levels 1,2,3. Also, since NEBOSH is more expensive, you will want to it with flying colours. Hence Levels 1,2,3 HSE Certification helps you with "knowing your enemy" so to speak. So, if you can afford it, then go for it under ISPON or other training centers. As a graduate you aren't required to do all 3 levels as a matter of fact. This will help prepare you for NEBOSH. Good luck. |

enemerci: There are two ISPON organizations in Nigeria currently. But only one deals with HSE Training /Certification and serves as the HSE Professional Body. The two available organisations using ISPON in Nigeria are: 1. Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (formerly Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals,NISP) 2.Institute of Software Practioners of Nigeria (this has NOTHING TO DO WITH HSE TRAINING or the HSE Profession. At least not yet.) There was a long standing battle between the two on the internet domain name/website that led to the crash of the NISP/ISPONs own website. Becuse the software guys are internet savvy, they were accused as intentionally jeopardising the website of the NISP/ISPON. It was a problem for a long time. People. couldn't reach the NISP/ISPON. Eventually this problem was solved. This is the website for the safety/HSE Ispon http://www.ispon.gov.ng With respect to the cost, please from the numbers on the NISP/ISPON website. Also, where possible pay a visit to their location and ask them directly. Usually the money is paid into a bank and teller/evidence of payment used to process prospective trainees for the training proper. A lot of changes may have taken place as the world advances. Make enquiries and proper confirmations. Good luck. |

Alphaman007: Like someone rightly pointed out. Not all graduates get jobs after years in Nursery, Primary, Secondary and University Educational Institutions. So DO WE all conclude that EDUCATION IS A WASTE OF TIME . Yes education can be or not. There are some life skills not taught in school today. You can only get them professionally outside these institutions. E. G. Financial Intelligence and Managing Money etc. The School has its uses. Professional training has its uses as well. If your aim is to land a job, then you have misunderstood the purpose of professional training. Getting a job is only an indirect consequence of being professionally trained and being good/professional at what you do. Why don't you learn the knowledge, open a consulting firm with other partners and CREATE THE JOBS? GOOD LUCK 1 Like |
