The Beginning

This indeed is going to be another chapter as I indeed exploring the animal farming sector.

Recently, I have been reading up different articles on goat rearing and it's profitability. Having gotten all materials needed, I guess I am set to exploring another chapter in my farming experience, and this time, it going to be with Goats.

I went to a local village along Badagry Express way, Ikoga to be precise. Took a while before getting the African Dwarf goat that melted my heart. I got two females. Also, i visited a farm within the same axis and paid for a pregnant Hausa goat - Rago (Wish I knew the real name) which I would be picking up later in the week.

Two African Dwarf Goats (Females): 10 per each. = N20,000
One Pregnant Hausa goat: N15,000

Total: N35,000

The two African dwarf goats are both from the same parent and 8months each.

Naming my goats

Still thinking of the perfect names for my pioneer goats.

Farm setup

I certainly can't allow my beautiful goats roam around freely (I ain't no herdsman), so I am going to be employing a ranching system on a farm.

I dont think Goat rearing is really that profitable. ... I brought two local female Goat for rearing around 2015 and was only able to get 4 kids lost two remaining two... am even planning of selling them out this end of the year. ....

None at the moment. I will still be visiting the villages in week's time to get the perfect Buck at the best price. For now, I need to settle the 2 African Dwarfs (Mitchell & Patra) and Pregnant Hinata in.

Feeding the Goats

Yesterday's activities was quite hectic and tiring. Indeed, I now believe one of the greatest insult you can insult any human with is saying; You are a goat. Settling the goats in was a bit of a task but, they are doing fine now.

Now the question is What to feed my goats?
There's the erroneous assumption that a goat will eat virtually anything that comes its way, ranging from grasses, bread, leftover from the kitchen... even paper and plastics etc. Nope!! Goats are very selective in their eating. More to the Deer than to the cattle. So I intend giving my goats a perfect balanced diet meal plan.

Today, I would be visiting Alaba Rago to get Hay sacks for my goats. Other food supplements would be gotten even as I seek advises from the Hausa's in the Rago Market.

Yes, it is not profitable if you're not doing it intensively as a business. Goat business comes in 3 forms - meat goat, dairy goats for milk, and goat breeding. You must decide which one you're into, so you set appropriate targets.

To make money from meat goats, the animals must be kept in pens and fed aggressively with balanced rations so they gain weight fast.

If you're keeping them to breed, having them gain weight fast is usually not the target. But, to succeed generally in goat business, good nutrition is key and their health must be closely monitored, with vaccines and dewormers given on schedule.

Your goats must eat a well balanced rations, with adequate amounts of digestible protein, carbohydrate, and mineral salts, as grass fodder alone does not promote this.

To feed your goats cheaply, get wheat or barley seeds and sunflower seeds. Sprout these grains hydroponically and give to your goats to help them grow healthy. Also, supplement them with mineral blocks to lick and have a VET DOC to help prescribe good dewormers and to set a vaccine schedule for them.

Do this and see a good turnaround in your goat business. Goodluck with your goat business!

Spot on!!! I keep asking myself why people do things the conventional way in this modern times. You SIMPLY HAVE TO INVEST MORE TO ACHIEVE BEST RESULTS.

By the way, I intend exploring the breeding aspect. I will appreciate practical tips from you from time to time.

Yes they do . The gestation period of a healthy goat is 145-147 days, that means a goat will be pregnant twice in one year(at least) .But if you are in a hurry to make quick profit , I suggest you invest in more females to increase your future flock . Or ,you could buy goats from the remote villages near you , train and keep them until festive periods and then , resell them in urban areas . Or , you can go to the goat market with a vet(this what I do ); have the vet select sick goats(since the price will be lower )that have the potential to get well easily with little or no medication . Once they are well , sell them .

Yes, firstly as a hubby, then I intend making profits off my hobby while gathering the required knowledge.

On profit projections; Definitely in place. This is one of my 5 years program. I have a well drafted out blueprint of what is expected yearly and at the end of the 5th year.

A quick review, the African dwarf goats becomes active and ready to breed starting from 6 months in some cases but like most breeders/farmers, I intend keeping them for a year before breeding (one reason i intentionally didnt buy a male goat) I guess going by the sellers information, I have 4months more to go since they were 8months as at the time of purchase.

Secondly, the goats have gestation period of about 145 - 148 days, that about two births in a year. Though I don't intend to overstress them.
And from the information gotten from the seller, the mother goats gives birth to three (3) kids per birth, which I confirmed.
That is, by my calculations (using the two African dwarf I got)
1. 6 kids per 1 goat every year (x2 goats) = 12
2. In Five years, 12 x 5years = 60 goats

Lol...that's in an ideal state. Oya in reality

1. At least a birth each year i.e. 3 per goat yearly
For two goats, that's 6 goats yearly
2. In 5 years, 6 x 5 = 30 goats from both goats

Note: I have no intention of selling till the third year. So calculation above is been done on the two goats now.

Feeding and medication is another. For the time been, all I use is sourced solely by me at no cost except for the first time I went to food at alaba Rago. I have been getting excess supply of pap waste from the community though I except things to change soonest.
