http://www.defenceweb.co.za/mobilesite/defenceweb/home/item_id-51913/ Some key work being done at the fake/scam company Denel. Firsts for Denel Dynamics in close area protection system development Denel Dynamics has achieved another milestone in the development of its technology demonstrator missile - the Mongoose 3 - part of the close area protection system (CAPS) project funded tly by Armscor and the Department of Defence (DoD). According to the latest edition of Denel Insights, the programme is now at the stage where it is ready to integrate vertical launch and programme flight tests at Armscor's Alkantpan test range in the Northern Cape. The missile is part of Denel Dynamics' Science 4 project under the leadership of programme manager Peter Malan-Cameron and systems engineer Reinart Moraal. The project has achieved a number of "firsts" in its design, the publication states. "Through Science 4 Denel Dynamics is developing technology to provide close area protection against rocket, artillery and mortar threats. It uses the Mongoose 3 to intercept these and detonate them at a maximum range of about a kilometre. "The team developed and built critical components including a laboratory missile, three flight test missiles, a vertical launcher, ground fire control equipment and a full telemetry system," according to the Denel publication. Mongoose 3 is as a test bed for new technologies including: a new type of vertical launch using tip-over rocket motors - a first for Denel Dynamics; dual control airframe technology sees control executed by canards and tail fins, a "world first" Denel claims; and an ultra-capacitor-based low-cost power source which has long uncharged life and provides sufficient energy for 10 seconds of flight. The Mongoose missile has been developed by Denel for various active protection and counter-rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) systems. Initially Saab Grintek Defence and Reutech Radar Systems worked together with Denel Dynamics on an active protection system (LEDS 150) incorporating the Mongoose 1 missile, which was designed to shoot down an RPG-7 type anti-tank rocket launched as close as 20 metres away, detonating it in flight. In 2014 the Mongoose 2 successfully intercepted an incoming round at 60 metres. The subsequent Mongoose 3 was designed to shoot down heavy anti-tank missiles as far as 300 metres from the vehicle, and deflect a high-velocity kinetic energy "long-rod penetrator" fired by a tank, causing it to fall short or hit at an oblique angle at which it will not penetrate a tank's armour. Saab stopped development of LEDS 150 pending it finding a funding partner and it is assumed that elements of Mongoose 3 may now be used on the Denel Dynamics Cheetah C-RAM system that was unveiled at Africa Aerospace and Defence 2016. Denel said the Cheetah missile is a completely new system with its own radar seeker that will have a proximity warhead, although it will use technologies that have been developed for other Denel Dynamics missiles. The Cheetah C-RAM system combines the Rheinmetall Skyshield protection system and Denel's Cheetah missile system. It is being designed to protect against light weapons, which are increasingly found in the hands of rebels and other irregulars, such as SAM-7 shoulder-fired missiles, light cannons and mortars. 4 Likes |

Army investing in real estate. Why choose banana island of all place. ![]() ![]() ![]() COAS, Buratai Launches Army’s Apple Project in Lagos Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai yesterday launched the Nigerian Army’s Apple Island Project in Lagos. The projected was initiated and completed by the Army Chief, Buratai who also witnessed the landmark event that took place off Banana Island, Lagos. The project, under the auspices of the Nigerian Army Properties Limited (NAPL), is contracted to Van Oord and Julius Berger, with Tauraf International Limited as developer. Covering a total area of 45 hectares, the project will feature, among others, residential quarters, green areas, clubhouse, police post, shopping mall, sewage treatment plant, water treatment plant, power sub-station and two jetties. However, residents of Banana Island staged a protest laying claims to the ownership of the land. The protesters who were led by their chairman, Mr. Chudi Ubosi, described the project as illegal, accusing the military of encroachment. In a swift reaction, the developer of the project, Chief Babajide Ayoade, disagreed with the protesters, insisting the initiative is part of a decades-old master plan, which is only now being effected now. Reacting to the allegations, the COAS, Gen Buratai addressed the residents and promised to adhere to due process. https://thenigerian.news/coas-buratai-launches-armys-apple-project-lagos/ |

REACTIVATION OF AIRCRAFT HANDED OVER BY NIGERIA IMMIGRATION SERVICE REACHES ADVANCED STAGE The ongoing reactivation of the Do-228 aircraft recently handed over to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has reached an advanced stage. The extent of work was witnessed by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, during on-the-site inspection visits to some units in Kaduna on 4 June 2018. The CAS also inspected the ongoing construction of headquarters complex for the Air Training Command Kaduna. He was pleased to observe that work was progressing as scheduled. Meanwhile, the airframe of one of the 3 aircraft received from the NIS had been heavily corroded before it was handed over and therefore Beyond Economic Repairs. Furthermore, preliminary inspections have been conducted on the remaining 2 aircraft by NAF engineers and technicians at 431 Engineering Group, NAF Base Kaduna. One of the 2 repairable Do-238 aircraft that was at Kaduna Civil Airport has already been ferried to the Kaduna military airfield following initial maintenance activities by the NAF maintenance crew. In addition, the faded paintings on both aircraft have been replaced with military paint schemes to minimize corrosion and in preparation for subsequent deployment to operational theaters. The NAF is now awaiting the delivery of the required Time Change Items and other aircraft spares to enable the conduct of mandatory outstanding scheduled inspections on both aircraft. Apart from its usefulness as a light liaison transport aircraft, the Do-228 could be employed for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions in the counterinsurgency and other operations in the country. Consequently, by the time the reactivation is completed, the operational effectiveness of the NAF would be further boosted and the hitherto grounded aircraft prevented from total decay. There's been an understandable tendency to showcase specops on these pages. However most of what we see are actually QRFs,SWATs,light infantries, various VBSS units,Rangers, paras and occasionally ordinary troopers with Gucci kit and/or fancy tabs. Eg, Ivorien, specops. REALLY,NIGGA!? Jean-Fraude after all the poo he's pulled in that country will properly train a potent potential enemy force? Anyway, that's a discussion for another thread. http://special-ops.org/wp-content/s/2017/01/ivory-coast-soldiers.jpg True spec forces are few and far between! The drop out rate, live ammo consumption and thorough all round training can push up training costs to 12-20x normal. The financial aspect therefore mitigates against even establishing true specops. Unsurprisingly the US therefore has the highest number and widest spectrum of true specop units-the SEALS,Deltas, marine Raiders,USAF parerescue etc etc are all under their parent formations under USSOCOM. In fact there are even operational specops Coast Guard units! Not under USSOCOM they're therefore often unknown. Hollywood, books and documentaries rarely if ever mention these USCG units who number around 3000 in total, though tbjh I couldn't get firm figures . In 6 forces they're grouped under the Deployed Ops group -maritime security response unit -maritime safety and security team -naval coastal warfare squadrons -port security units -national strike force -tactical law enforcement teams.
