There's no value in freedom of speech if it's only limited to things that won't offend anybody. Freedom of speech includes the freedom to offend. That's actually what I said initially. The freedom to say what is not offensive to anybody is not a right that needs to be defended. It is just a fact of life. Even in North Korea and Saudi Arabia, nothing you say will cause you harm if nobody is offended by it. Freedom of speech must include the freedom to say things that other people find offensive in order to have meaning. Thus, it is essentially the freedom to say offensive things.

That is the point of the op, if Freedom of Speech is soo unlimited then why is seun a major proponent moderating this forum so closely. It is not about what other forums are doing but seun putting what he believes into practice. As you can see even in Europe they jail people who say things that goes against the officially accepted version of an event. nairaland without regulations curtailing limits of freedom of expression will represent what can possibly go wrong if freedom of speech goes beyond acceptable limits of human behavior.

Yes, there should be exceptions to freedom of speech. It should be illegal to call for violent acts against anybody. It should be illegal to deliberately lie against an innocent person to ruin that person's reputation, if a lawyer can prove that it was a deliberate lie. But it should not be illegal to insult or offend or provoke people. Nobody should have the right to not be insulted. No beliefs should have the privilege of not being criticised or mocked. People should be made to learn that, while they can't control what others say, they can and must control their reactions.

"Freedom of speech" as a concept means the freedom to air one's views without fear of being punished or censored by a government, not the right to use someone else's private property as a means of publicizing one's opinions.

Being able to decide what is tolerated on Nairaland is Seun's freedom of speech; those who don't like how he exercises this freedom are equally free to start their own forums, where they can say what they like (libel and incitement laws permitting), secure in the knowledge that Seun won't be able to interfere with what they tolerate on their own platforms.
