I have always viewed astrologer as some jobless men gazing blankly into the outer space trying to catch a glimpse of a flying comet and immediately attach to such phenomenon a prophecy of imminent doom instigated by a malevolent deity. Not until yesterday did i get an insight into the beauty and fascination of star-gazing.
Last night about 9:00pm i was busy with some paperwork out in the open and in the process, subconsciously raised my head skywards. My sight was greeted with the view of a somewhat familiar arrangement of bright stars. Due to my peripheral knowledge of zodiacs, i jumped into conclusion that the constellation before me was orion (which is probably not even among the zodiac constellations) *smiles* i even tagged it the name orion the plough (absolutely wrong: orion the hunter was different from what i saw last night). Since i was so uncertain about my judgements on this my discovery , i did some online research and soon found out that the group of stars i saw beforE me here in NigerIA

Was actually an asterism (part of a constellation) called the Big Dipper which is part of the star consteallation known according to many ancient civilizations as the Great Bear.. I Previously Thought That constellations could only be seen clearly from the far east and western asia (the levant) until yesterday. I kinda saw it upside down (it looked more like a chariot to me). The Sight Was Quite Fascinating.

actually i do see orion almost every night if the weather is clear enough....its probably the easiest constellation to spot because its visible from every part of the world. Your picture is actually not orion but one simple way to find orion is to look for the belt, i.e the three stars that are properly aligned. Star gazing is a very beautiful thing , i wish i had a telescope

i previously thought it was orion but i later discovered that its an asterism called the big dipper... As for the hunter's belt, its one of the most common spectacles of the nightat my area but i never knew it to be orion the hunter

yeah, once youve discovered the belt its easier to piece the constellation. another tip is to check for the red dwarf in the constellation.....btw do you see others?

Yea, I've seen it. Only it was kinda upside down.


One weird thing I've also noticed is that sometimes the stars are not always in perfect position. I mean sometimes I spot constellations in certain shapes, only that it's missing one or two stars; or some of the stars don't shine as brightly as others.

What do you think, Is it Valid or is the Oshogbo weed I smoked 4 years ago still affecting me

lol....all that thanks to the atmosphere and luminosity of the stars. most times the cloud prevents us from getting beautiful images of the stars so the brighter stars are more visible.

about the constellation beign upside down , this is one tricky part in locating the constellation because the way i usually see it is different from pictures i get from google. I had to rotate that image of orion i posted to look the way i see it from here

Yeah, one thing about Constellations is that you don't see the constellation immediately but you notice the patterns. It's after you see the patterns, the dots that you start connecting.

its the star at the tail end of ursa minor

Just saw Venus next to the moon... Still very visible tho
