There are actually degrees of idleness cos one can be unemployed and also underemployed. You can't expect a youth who dreams big but ends up being a bus conductor cos of the situation of the country to make the best out of himself.
What do you say to leaders who were able to make great achievement at their youthful age as a leader... See the likes of Murtala Mohammed who was head of state at 37 and his 6 months at the helm of affairs was very promising; also,Gowon who was 32 when he became head of state at the time Nigeria was going through her biggest crisis - the Civil War... they made a useful impact.

Those are head of State, it is easy to rule then, because there is no division of power. But a Nigerian youth president(democracy) is more likely to be a “figure head” president, someone that will be pushed around by the party. Do you think a president of 28 years old will rule the country effectively with the likes of 50 years old senate president, 60 years old vice president, the house of assembly where the average age is like 55 years old? He will be face with so many difficulties because he will not want to step on the old men toes (We know what happened to Goodluck trying to step on Obasanjo), in a country where we believed if someone actually younger to be our child ruling over us hurts our pride. A younger president will actually be ruled by the party, people that help him there, the same old men will still be ruling, the youth president will only be a camouflage president. The Nigerian youth is far from ready.

Who are those using them for these bad deeds Isn't it the old ones?? Shouldn't they be laying good examples they keep taking advantage of the gullible youths who fall into their traps...
Who are those denying the youths of education and good standard of living?? These same old people so as to prevent the youths from taking over from them... Isn't that pathetic

We need change!!
We youths can do it!!
Let's say no to gerontocracy!!!

The Nigerian youth that will bend at any slight offer(Monetary or in favour) will make a great president? The youth need to stand out, prove that he is going to be better before a chance can be considered. At least we still be in old wisdom.

That's a fallacy.. . Like you don't know the kind of Nigeria we're in, let's stop deceiving ourselves and lets face reality... How will the poor who is denied qualitative education fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo who ruled this nation from 1999 to 2007 didn't have a qualitative education while he rules Nigeria yet he ruled very well .

No one dream can be shattered. The same youth that refused to go into Agriculture, or go into entrepreneurship to start from the scratch. The same Nigerian youth that has never invented anything before. The same waiting for a white-collar job. The same Nigerian youth has never done anything to improve their society waiting for the government to do everything for them. The Nigerian youth lacks the mental strength, the experience to rule Nigeria.

that Nigeria is blessed with manpower and resources but the lack of good governance to utilize these opportunities keep pushing Nigeria to the background in international politics.
There is no point in keeping failed elders in government.
In business, youths have demonstrated across the world that they are capable of bringing a new touch, new
dimension and new initiative products that could sell in millions. In science, youths have equally demonstrated their ability to improve on old knowledge and discover new things. It is also the same in every other aspect of life. Why can’t youths take the chance in government?
Since the older people usually concentrate on bigger
challenges, like the stability of government and get
consumed by it, the youths concentrate on minor but very crucial aspect of government, things that are crucial to the stability of the society.

Calm down, this is not a political rally.

You suggested giving the youths a try. What indications have the youths shown to prove they are ready to govern if given the opportunity?

In your opening arguments you made mention of the youths who ruled the nation in the 70s and how they are the same people ruling the nation now. What difference did they make as youths as opposed to their decisions now?
What do you presume changed?

A leader is a leader. .. what matters is a successful istration. Nigerian youths can really show our ineffective democrats what democracy should be all about. The inventive mentality, innovative proficiency and creativity that accompany the youthful naivety which goes against the creed of our old-fashioned rulers stand them in good stead for the huge task of overhauling the nation’s present challenges.. Will it be an easy task? Definitely No but it is a realistic objective.

The task in ruling one state or a ministry cannot be compared to the task of a ruling the whole 36 states. It requires wisdom, mental strength, a lot experience especially in a developing country like Nigeria.
You say the youths are corrupt and have proven to be inept at governing even the smallest political body.
How do you suggest Nigeria can come out of this?
Can you proffer possible measures that can be put in place to prepare the youths for governance when these old men finally retire or on?

A leader is not always a leader. Circumstances change. And are you trying to say the old men do not have inventive mentality(Obasanjo), lacks innovative proficiency(Former Governor of Lagos state, Fashola) or Creativity? Late Yaradua ruled Nigeria effectively and I don't think he was a youth then. Just like my partner's quote "What an elderly man sees while sitting, even if a young man climbs the highest mountain, he will not be able to see it" – Nigerian Proverb.

Can you cite examples of what these men achieved during their reign as heads of government as youths?

Nigeria is a virgin economy with a population of over 140 million people-- who are mostly consumers. How do you suppose that a youth who can't take advantage of prevalent economic environment to think his way out of the box will successfully manage a nation like Nigeria, say in a situation like the past president faced with the insurgents and refusal of the US to send arms; or the current oil crisis?

In your opening speech you highlighted with facts how the older generation has run the country to the ground, and cited instances of countries like the US whose young leaders have proven to be capable hands.
What peculiar similarities does the Nigerian youth share with these foreigners you've mentioned, that convinces you-- and us by default-- we are capable of producing the same results?
Murtala became head of government after gowon, inheriting an overbloated civil service and armed forces. He put measures in place to correct these anomalies and curb corruption that was already infesting the whole system.
He's fondly ed for his "Africa has come of age" speech. Which for the first time defined Nigeria's foreign policy direction..
He did all these at the age of 37
There may be differences between the situation of the Nigerian youth and her US counterparts. But the strength of youth lies in the similarities they share -- being the majority of the population, the work force and being born into a more innovative generation than the generation before them.
These are the characteristics that makes the youths stand out. They are the wheel of the economy and the nation. So they understand the frictions and the challenges better than any other person.

The youth have to start taking a strong stance against corruption now, we have to go about changing our mentality, and changing the people around us. We need to stop the act of greed that was breed in us. We need to start doing community service(free service to the community without monetary gain) and helping our society in our little way. We need to know it is not just , it is all about the well-being of every Nigerian. We need to stop taking bribery or give one. We need to show we are different from the old men we call corrupt, we need to start saying no to them. We need to show it is not about our present situation, it is about the future. The change is in the hand of the Youth, it needs to start from us.

Youths are the majority in the society, they understand their own needs and aspirations, and they understand the challenges of the modern day youths which are beyond the scope of the elderly people to be able to proffer any meaningful and impacting solution. In the 70s, these men were driven by undiluted love for this nation. And it was visible in their actions (and inactions as the case may be). They had those lofty dreams of youth and they tried to make it come true to the best of their ability.

Fast forward to 2015.. Most of these guys cling on to the corridors of power mostly for personal gain and political relevance.

Experience is the best teacher which in turn can be observatory or participatory.

Don't you think the Nigerian youths have garnered enough experience in the past two decades to make them well equipped and informed to handle leadership of the country?
Give reasons for your answer.

it is generally said that the glory of a man is in the days of his youth. This strength of the youth should be channeled towards gaining experience to lead and not to be in a haste to lead because it would just be a bunch of figure heads immersed in the feel of power leading the Nation

First, I will like u to know that experience is something we cannot get enough of and with the way youths of now adays are so eager to gain power , giving them the leadership position is like giving a child the ring of power,he cannot operate it because he does not know the purpose for which it was made . Nigerian youth of today criticize the ruling elders without proffering a solution but still depends on those elders to put food on their tables. Criticism is not the way ahead as we generally know that action speaks louder than voice.

my question goes to Miracy.
You said and I quote "there are different types of idleness. unemployment or underemployment." Now we know Rome wasn't built in a day and so the youths can't come out strong in a day to lead but with what you said, are you giving an excuse for the laziness of the youths? because greatness is transforming your present state to beat the expectations of the people which can't be achieved by excuses.

The Nigerian youth is far from making a great president yet. We are not prepared for the challenge yet, the youth still have a lot of work to do in curbing out corruption within themselves, mental strength is still missing, and the ability for fight for what we want is still lacking.

A clarion call to all youths including myself to change and redirect our mind sets towards the things that matter. Let us indeed lift our nation high. Let us indeed lift our States high. We need youths who will be different from the rest. We need youths who can be leaders of tomorrow. We need youths who can be leaders of today. Let that youth be you and I.
Thanks
