Automatic Gearbox Problems (202000 Views)
bebedlolo: 7:13pm On May 09, 2015 |
Dear Car Doc, please my 07 camry doesn't move when en engaged in any gear at all. It stopped me on the road and won't move.it is auto transmission. It was towed to a workshop. The mechanic claimed a wrong oil was used which I can't . He said it is a Nissan oil that was used. I kinda believed him cos I also used an fx35, so I suspect any of my siblings may have used the fx35 oil for the camry. Ok, cos I was broke then, I yielded to his advice to buy another gear box but 10pin instead of 13pin that came with the car. Movement seems ok but I noticed the transmission isn't too smooth, worst of all, it jerks when moving from 1 to 2. Pls what danger does this pose on the box and any other critical part of the car? Pls I need your help. Thank you

bebedlolo: Though this question is not directed to me but i should let you know the implication of what u did. The 10pin is a 4 speed transmission while the 13pin is a 5speed. The brainbox is looking for a 13pin while its not there. All the programming will be wrong. So ina short answer, there is nothing you can do to resolve the problem. 10pin is NOT 13pin. There is a reason for that. If i owe you N13 thousand Naira and i paid you N10 thousand, i am very sure u will ask for the rest. Change back, use like that or sell the car. Good luck 4 Likes |

bebedlolo: Wrong move bro. The power flow chat for both transmissions are not the same. The TCM will confuse the transmission, and vise versa. |

USAutoBuy:thanks a lot for your response bro. Just dat I need a bit of clarity concerning my specific concern/question. I believe and agree with you that it won't be same. The truth is that I hope to change it back to 13pin someday soon but I do not have almost 180k I was told it will cost. So my plan is to manage this 10pin for a while before buying the 13pin. So please advise me if the 10pin will cause any damage to any vital part of the car while I am using it before I gather money to buy 13pin. As in, what is or are the specific impacts or disadvantages of using the 10pin for a short while before switching back to 13pin when I raise money to buy it?Can it damage the engine or brainbox or any other major part of the car? I await you advice and help. Thanks a lot |

bebedlolo: Imagine you were driving a manual 5speed transmision, normally you would switch from 1-2-3-4-5 Now what was done in your case 2 was skipped, now you switch from 1-3-4-5 that's why it feels funny from 1-2 cause its actually doing 1-3. The transmission ecm looks for solenoid valve 2 does not find it, then switches to 3 that's why you have that break in transmission. Drive the 10pin as long as you like enjoy it, the drive will not be smooth but the pocket will be happy. Worst case senario its the 10pin gear that will get damaged. |

ACM10: 2000 Avalon uses Dexron 3 fluid. When i am in Nigeria, the best place i can trust to get it is Oando. They usually sell for about N1,000. Not sure about the current price as of now but should be in the same range. Any Oando should have it. Make sure its Dexron III and not 2. Sometimes if you remove the gear oil gauge stick, it will be written there. Good luck 2 Likes |

ACM10: Dextron III should be fine, but confirm from the dip stick. 1 Like |

bebedlolo: If you had plans of changing back to 13 pin (U250) soon, you should not have gone for 10 pin (U241). My reasons: 1. You lose money at trade in eventually. 2. You lose money paying mechanics for 'conversion' as they will tamper with your harness. 3. You lose money paying for labour and atf twice. 4. You harm your car - believe it or not, those guys don't leave cars the way they met them. How much did you buy the 10pin? Like GAZZUZZ said, what could get fried is the transmission itself. I don't know yet, how they drive a 4-gear transmission with a 5-gear chart without the car going into limp mode. You will also notice a reasonable drop in the car's fuel efficiency, as the 10pin is without an overdrive. We hope to get reliable rebuilders around soon. 1 Like |

Kashif:thanks gazzuzz and kashif. While I wait for more opinions and contributions, I must let you know that I appreciate your very helpful responses. Gazzuzz males a lot of sense as it clearly explains the logic behind the jerk from 1 to 3 while skipping 2. That explaination made me relaxed. My happiness is that it is only the gearbox itself that may go bad after a long use. Before then, it would hv served and I would hv made up money for the 13pin and oil. During trade in, I won't mind cos all I am planning for is a full replacement after the 10pin has served. Abt the conversion, the sockets of the 13pin were not removed, that of 10pin was only included, kinda tapping from the cables of the 13pin but retaining the 13pin socket whenever I am ready to change back to 13pin. |

Kashif:kashif, I know u r being very detailed but u Don put fear for my body for your last response. I feel like I shld change to 13pin ASAP, else I will I run into more trouble. Just dat d money for the 13pin isn't available yet. Date y I am wishing d 10pin will serve me a little while without cause any serious damage to any part of the car like engine brainbox e.t.c. |
Kashif(m): 10:53pm On May 10, 2015 |
bebedlolo: It will not damage your engine, but the engine would work harder with the 10pin. To better understand the details, we need to look at the apply chart for both transmissions to determine what was possibly compromised. As a matter of fact, it is even possible your 10pin has some issues already (not meant to spook you). If your 2-3 command from your TCM was was actually skipped, what I think you should be experiencing is delayed 1-2, and a sluggish '2' in the 10pin. The reverse happens on downshift. On the other hand if 5 was sacrificed, you would notice nothing, given a healthy 10pin. Do not lose sleep over this bro. Your car will get its grove back soon. I only wish there are standard Rebuilders around. |

Kashif:alright bro, thank you for sustaining this knowledge packed thread. I spoke with a transmission specialist/technician based on your last . I was suggesting the wiring job be done again, probably mapping 1 to 4 and skipping 5. The guy said till I come on Saturday. I hope this is safe or I should just forget it till I have the money to replace with a 13pin? Gurus Gazzuzz, Kashif, Car Doc and all, abeg make una guide my thought oo. Need . Kashif gave me sigh of relief when he said I should not get too worried but the part that wasn't too clear was when he added that my car will get its groove back soon. So please is it still with the 10pin or when I get the 13pin? |
Kashif(m): 6:10pm On May 11, 2015 |
bebedlolo: I have now compared the apply charts for the two transmissions, and found that what you have lost is the 3rd gear. The technician does not have options than to make use of the existing shift solenoids in the 10pin. Do not bother him, as he cannot map 1-4 and skip 5 for you. 13pin has four shift solenoids while 10pin has three. Using the shift algorithm already in your ECM, they will do without the fourth solenoid (SL3) that 13pin has. The only way to make your ECM drive 10pin is to skip 3. With that, you should be experiencing delayed 2-3. I meant your car will get its groove back when you install the default 5 speed 13pin. Hope this helps. 1 Like |

GAZZUZZ: Thanks bro, but I am actually looking for a spare part dealer for cars o, especially the transmission box or components. |
bebedlolo: 8:27pm On May 11, 2015 |
Kashif:Great! This explanation has nailed it. Then it means it is the delayed 2-3 that jerks the car forward with force right? |
Kashif(m): 6:42am On May 12, 2015 |
bebedlolo: I thought you said the shudder is at 1-2? Have you now confirmed its 2-3? |
bebedlolo: 7:09am On May 12, 2015 |
Kashif:I said it is 1-2 because I notice the forward jerk when I am accelerating from idle state to a faster movement. It was cos of ur last explanation where you said it is 3 that was likely skipped, that's why I said maybe it is 2-3 that jerks when I am driving. So it is not that I have confirmed it is 2-3, I am guided by ur Sir |
Kashif(m): 9:00am On May 12, 2015 |
bebedlolo: The shudder point is easy to determine. From rest, accelerate and count the shifts: 1-2, 2-3, 3-4. From there, you will know where its happening for sure. The reason it is likely happening in 2-3 is because the engine speed is higher than the mapped speed for that shift. The 10pin is shifting from 2-3 when the ECU is actually commanding 3-4. Just have it in mind that 10pin on a 13pin car will NEVER be the same. The performance and efficiency difference is wide. Just drive it like that. Who knows, you might even get used to it and 'forget' the 13pin. |

cardoctor(m): 8:40pm On May 12, 2015 |
bebedlolo: USAutobuy and others have answered your question. The gearbox would eventually pack up and you must replace it to 13 pin to solve the problem. |
Kashif(m): 10:28pm On May 12, 2015 |
cardoctor: Out of curiosity and education, could you let us in on what would eventually kill this transmission? Learning, thank you. |

Kashif:yeah, car doctor please educate us more . We appreciate the knowledge share |
USAutoBuy(m): 7:44am On May 13, 2015 |
bebedlolo: I am still amazed about some questions here. When the brainbox is designed/programmed differently to the actual gearbox. The speed ratio that the vehicle should change gears is different for a 4 speed and a 5 speed transmission. This is what makes the rough shifting and will lead to unnecessary and premature wear of the gearbox components and untimely failure. The designers who designed the gearbox must have a reason for doing so otherwise they wouldn't have. There is also a possibility that the petrol consumption may not be as good as it should be cos gear 5 supposed to be the overdrive. The one you have there is 4 speed. The brainbox will be confused. Sometimes people expect the right result with a wrong input or may be they just want someone else to say what they want to hear and make them feel good. The whole car is an equation. Changing a variable (gearbox) out of that equation will change the result. How else can that be more simple ![]() |
