Guess this was when the Festac Town area was being developed and expanded? The roads there are really horrible today.

LASG should serve all the home owners in FESTAC quit notice and then embark on massive demolition of the entire area.. the rubbish there now wasn't what FG intended it for.. Most of the buildings in FESTAC now are illegal structures outside the original master plan. Eko wake up.. 141 Likes 4 Shares |

The buildings still stand, but the roads and environment have deteriorated badly. Both state and federal governments have abandoned that area. So sad. 8 Likes |

If you were caught embezzling without approval of your Oga in those days... you will go straight to Prison even if you were a Colonel at the level of a Minister now.

Racoon: The project was commenced by the government of Gowon, but was completed by OBJ. It was intended to meet the deadline for the then Festival of arts and culture, just like the national theater, Iganmu. Upon completion, it was a very beautiful place to reside, very peaceful and built to European standard. It was istered by the Federal housing Authority, just like such projects scattered around the nation. Just like the then famous Bar beach, everyone who visited Lagos must get to Festac to behold the beauty. No open drainages, very clean roads and properly organized houses, with the tennis lawn. My brother, politics and tribalism set it. Neglect by FHA set in due to corruption. Infact at a time we were told that Festac had become the LG headquarters of Amuwo Odofin. The estate was secured by lottery. Those who won became home owners of the different types of houses requested in the forms filled. That’s why today, you find Nigerians of all tribes and religion owning properties there. The same went for Jakande’s low cost houses everywhere. Today, they have all become this sad eyesore. The only reason is CORRUPTION. Those in charge of maintaining the estates, ended up enriching themselves as we were told. 17 Likes |

FESTAC is a metaphor for the general descent into decay of almost all facets of national life managed by Nigerians…..be it structures or institutions! In this regard, where you do see islands of sanity in the sea of chaos and decay, then it’s mostly as a result of specifically targeted interventions that’s largely inorganic, as we see with the rehabilitated National Theatre or a few companies owned by gov’t enabled/ed billionaires!

flokii: The entire Festac is owned by the Federal Government. Except if Lagos wants to fully take over or maybe they have handed it over to the Lagos state Government. But as early as the 2000's. Festac was still a city in a city. Not nowadays again. The entire area is nothing to write home about 5 Likes |
