Edo Governor Faces Backlash from TVC anchors for Defying Court Orders on LG chairs Reinstatements

- Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo is under fire for allegedly flouting multiple court orders mandating the reinstatement of sacked local government chairmen, drawing sharp criticism from analysts, opposition leaders, and the judiciary.

During a broadcast on TVC’s breakfast show Friday morning, anchors slammed Okpebholo’s defiance of judicial rulings, accusing him of acting “like an emperor” by disregarding a Supreme Court decision affirming local government autonomy.

The criticism followed a Leadership Newspaper report highlighting the governor’s refusal to comply with court directives to reinstate elected officials.


The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated the controversy, condemning Okpebholo’s actions as “flagrant lawlessness” and a “direct assault on the judiciary.” At a press conference in Benin City, PDP leaders accused the governor of steering Edo into “unconstitutional territory” by ignoring rulings that declared the suspensions and impeachments of local government chairmen illegal.


The crisis stems from the Edo State House of Assembly’s alleged attempt, reportedly backed by Okpebholo, to remove elected local government officials, a move that contradicts a Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy and public statements from the Attorney General of the Federation deeming such actions unconstitutional.


Last week, two Edo State High Court rulings delivered significant blows to the state government. In one case, Justice B.A. Okoh ordered the immediate reinstatement of Hon. Tajudeen Alade, Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, and directed Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to provide security for Alade to resume his duties.
In a separate ruling, Justice O.M. Obayuwana declared the impeachment of Hon. Zibiri Marvelous and Hon. Benji Ojietu, Chairman and Vice Chairman of Etsako West Local Government, respectively, unconstitutional. The court nullified their removal, citing violations of Section 19 of the Edo State Local Government Law, and issued a perpetual injunction barring the state from interfering with their mandates. The court also imposed ₦1 million in costs on the councilors responsible, describing their actions as “illegal and politically motivated.”
Growing Tensions



The standoff has intensified tensions between the Okpebholo istration and opposition groups, with analysts warning that the governor’s defiance could undermine judicial authority and local governance in Edo State. The PDP has called for urgent action to address what it describes as a dangerous precedent for democratic institutions.

When Etsako East chairman was reinstated during Obaseki, he ignored it and worked with his appointee. And Deputy Governor Shuaibu was reinstated, Obaseki worked with his appointed Deputy Governor to the last day. So there's nothing new in Edo State politics.

Okphebolo once said it that he is a confused man and he pledged allegiance to only his leaders to do exactly whatever they tell him. Imagine Okphebolo and his APC led by Oshiomole using APC thugs as councilors (not elected councilors , in some LGAs, they kidnapped only one or two councilors) to impeach both chairmen and vice just in one day without following the local government law on how a chairman can be removed but can Okphebolo read and understand? No. Do APC obey law or court orders? No but we salute the TVC anchors for coming out boldly to condemn this unlawful act by the INEC select governor Okphebolo.

Stop deceiving yourself, was Etsako East vice chairman removed together with the chairman? Did he win in court before their tenure expires? Was any of these LGA Chairmen served notice of impeachment the way Shaibu was served after 22 of the House of Assembly both APC and PDP signed the impeachment notice? Did Edo state Chief Judge set up for Shaibu to defend himself or not? Speak to the issues with the way the impeachment was carried out and the court judgment and law. Did your God Oshiomole reinstate OSARO Obazee of Oredo local government when court reinstated him? He is the godfather of Okphebolo pushing him.

Governance is now in perpetual vacation since this current failed INEC IMPOSED GOVERNOR took over illegally and also went ahead to suspend Democratically Elected Local Government Chairmen who have been reinstated by the court.

This is the height of travesty and political impunity which should be resisted by the Good People of Edo State because this nonsense cannot to exist 🙄

Thou I am against the illegal impeachment. Normally the current chairmen has the right to appeal the judgement and they are in the court now. Governors do everything possible to pocket the LGA. Obaseki conducted a sham election that install the chairmen. It is a power tussle.
