In every generation there is always a change or a shift from previous beliefs or ways of doing things and names are also part of such change and influence.

In the 19th century Nigeria saw the raise with the Britain influence English names among the southern Nigeria. Nigerians began naming their children English names especially from the educated or exposed parents at the time.

And right now most of those popular English names are slowly disappearing with Gen Z. But some christian names might still remain because of strict Christian families.

Well it depends, When the British came in the 19th century, core British names like Florence, Margaret Hurbert, Harcourt, Wesley, Townsend, Cover, White, Duke, Cole, Boyle, Agatha etc were the trendy norms of the educated British wannabe elites. Then as Christianity spread and anti colonialism started to kick off, Nigerian started abducting Christian English names more like Paul, Victor, David, Joy, Alloysius, Grace, Favor, Blessing
Now it’s heading towards American influence as we are now seeing names like Jayden, Jordan, Jasmine, Michelle etc sighs

And yet you find those bearing such new names in terrible situations of life.

In those days, children were named according to the events either in the family, religion or the community. Some changed when they grew up and found that such names did not move their lives forward. Thus those, for example, whose names started with Ifa or Ogun, changed to Ola or Olu, Ade, etc. It cut across all tribes and religion nationwide.

However, life gives everyone his own opportunity. Everything has its own time. Life demands integrity. Life teaches us that what you sow, you reap. Life has principles. Just follow the principles and success comes your way. Everyone cannot be Dangote or Bill Gates. But everyone can live their lives in peace, joy and fulfillment.
