In recent weeks there has been a campaign to promote military coups across West Africa. Some analysts believe that this social media campaign is being sponsored by Russia. The Russians have denied that they have anything to do with it.

Rumours of a coup in the Ivory Coast have been spread on social media in the past 2 days. Despite the fact that people living in Abidjan have said that there is no coup, the rumour mongers have posted videos of street battles in other places and claimed that they are videos of Abidjan. They also claim that President Alassane Outtara has fled, despite the fact that the president actually attended a cabinet meeting yesterday.

The rumours began in Ghana and spread to Nigeria.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Ouattara attends council of ministers meeting despite coup rumours

by Claire Mom

President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday presided over a council of ministers meeting at the presidential palace in Abidjan, the Ivorian capital.

The Ivorian presidency confirmed Ouattara’s attendance in a statement issued, including pictures showing the president and cabinet at the meeting.

Diversification of electricity sources and adequate housing for citizens were among the topics addressed at the meeting.

The high-level meeting took place amid growing coup reports on social media in Ivory Coast.

An X- claimed that Ouattara may have been killed after military forces allegedly took over on Tuesday.

“Internet access in the country has been disrupted,” the wrote.

The allegations were spread across multiple s via various social media platforms, including X, Facebook, TikTok, and mainstream media platforms.

On Facebook alone, some 9.7k s discussed the alleged coup, the platform’s metric showed as of Wednesday.

Lassina Doumbia, chief of army staff, was also rumoured to have been killed.

TheCable spoke to journalists in the French-speaking West African country to confirm the development. They debunked the reports.

“There is no coup in Côte d’Ivoire. The country is stable,” Christelle Kouamé, an Ivorian journalist living in Abidjan, said.

Kouamé is also a member of the executive council of the National Union of Journalists of Côte d’Ivoire and a member of the organisation of Investigative Journalists in Côte d’Ivoire.

“The president was also recently at the opening of the Africa CEO Forum. It was last week. There was even a council of ministers today. And President Ouattara was there,” she added.

“It is fake news. People do what they want with the internet. But it is thanks to the internet that I speak to you,” she said, debunking rumours of disrupted internet access.

Coup rumours have become increasingly common in West Africa, reflecting a region grappling with political instability, weakened democratic institutions, and growing public distrust in civilian governments.

In recent years, several countries—including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea—have experienced successful military takeovers, fuelling speculation and anxiety in neighbouring states about who might be next.

Ivory Coast’s coup rumours came as the country prepares to host the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) annual meetings next week.

A new president is expected to be elected, succeeding Akinwumi Adesina, who has served two .

Some rumour mongers claim that the president has been captured while others claim that he fled. There have also been claims that the chief of defence staff is dead.

All these claims are not true.

The people that are backing this campaign have been calling for coups in Nigeria, Ghana, the Ivory Coast and other West African countries. They have also been promoting the military dictatorships in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The rumours are also being spread by some pro-Biafra groups.

It's the Traoré fever or effect but you have to be careful. Don't be too carried away. Africa's stability was never on the table of these guys, whether it's democrazy or not. They want to control us from behind the scenes and they will watch what is trending and who is trending. The way they assassinated Murtala is how they will bring another junta, sponsor them and control our resources. Africans should decide how they want their country to run and who runs it whichever system of government they choose for THEMSELVES

But some enemies of democracy have created threads celebrating the "coup" and calling for the same to happen in Nigeria.
I am still baffled how some people can hate their country to the extent of openly calling for military to take over.

People that celebrated the coup and wish the same on Nigeria are those that have never experienced military rule in their live.
The freedom of speech they are experiencing now will not exist, nobody will be able to criticize the government in power, any opinion that contradict the military own may lead to arrest, even social media activities will be regulated if not banned.
So be careful what you wish for.

Since Russia succeeded in Mali, Niger and especially with their star boy propaganda machine, Ibrahim Traore. They want to go all out more to instigate more military coup in Africa. They understand too that most African youths are gullible and will believe whatever they see online, just like they believe everything they are reading about Ibrahim Traore.
I don't blame them, but our greedy politicians cause it

According to a friend I chatted with over there, he said people protested over hardship in the country, and the president deployed troops to the scene of the protest, one of the soldiers shot dead one protester resulting in a serious riot not a coup. I'll still find out.

But you cannot criticize military government without first planning for how to run away from the country,or better still you can criticize them from other country where you feel safe.

What's happening is being well choreographed by Russia to lure gullible Africans into destabilizing their own countries to weaken them enough to become its puppets.

It's reminiscent of similar tactics used by foreign powers during the 50s and 60s (particularly the 60s) to radicalize young Africans in the military into seizing power from democratically elected governments.

In the case of Nigeria, what we're currently witnessing is similar to the propaganda that preceded and was used to recruit, motivate and mobilize the likes of Kaduna Nzeogwu into executing the coup that eventually triggered and culminated in the devastating Biafra civil war. Nigeria is still yet to recover from the consequences of those events.

Unfortunately, it seems the younger generation of Africans are too naive to understand that they're mere pawns in a high stakes game of chess of geopolitical proportions.

A coup might sound like a nice thing, but it always ends in tears.

A lot of people in Nigeria called for coups in 1965 and 1983, because let's be honest, the governments of the day were corrupt and bad. And the thing is, let's not lie, today's apc government is also corrupt and bad as were it's perdecessors. People have been calling for coups since we got democratic and honestly I don't blame them. Democracy in Nigeria has been a mess since 1999. These people don't represent folk like me

But army rule. We got what we wanted in 1966 and 1983. The 1966 coup precipated 4 years of unnecessary violence for nothing. Millions died for nothing. The 1983 coup led to 15 years of army rule, with the last five years being run by a guy who was basically on the verge of turning Nigeria into North Korea. Complete with personality cult of the Leader. And we could not criticize hin without being jailed incommunicado. At least under tpain, people like mmk have access to lawyers and doctors. Under abacha, get jailed by DSS, nothing like that.

At the end, a new army coup will lead to more years of sorrow. We will be begging for all the corrupt politicans to come back.

And let's be honest , if the 1966 coup had not happened, Nigeria won't have had to go through unnecessary crisis

Absolutely. I agree and mentioned that in the post you quoted. In the 50s and 60s onwards it was majorly the American CIA that was behind the coups and instability.

Kwame Nkrumah's overthrow is a classic case study. Till today most Ghanaians feel a deep sense of shame that they allowed themselves to be conned and used as willing tools to derail their own stability and progress.

But paradoxically, a large chunk of younger generation of Ghanaians are also currently being puppeteered & used by yet another foreign power to push pro-military takeover propaganda.

Apparently, Africans still lack the mental awareness to stay sovereign.
