Women traders at the New Market in Benin City staged a protest after government workers began removing the roofs of their stores without any prior notice.

According to an eyewitness, "They were suddenly asked to vacate their shops without being informed beforehand that the Edo State Government planned to ‘rebuild the market.’ The women were caught off guard when men just showed up and started dismantling their roofs under the guise of renovation."

Angered by the unexpected action, the women took to the main road, blocking it in protest.

This thing has nothing to do with the governor, the practice is common in most markets across different states in Nigeria

And the renovation of roofs will take another weeks displacing the women from their source of livelihood
