Why I Disagreed With Atiku's Camp Over Vice President Slot - Peter Obi

According to a report by VANGUARD, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, has finally addressed the speculation surrounding a potential political merger with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. The rumors, which surfaced following reports that Atiku’s political camp offered Obi a vice-presidential slot in a proposed alliance, had sparked widespread debate and concern among Obi’s ers.

In a statement reported by Vanguard, Obi firmly clarified his stance on the matter, emphasizing that his political mission has never been about securing titles or climbing the political hierarchy. Rather, he stressed that any discussion about coalition efforts must be rooted in shared values and a commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing socioeconomic challenges.

“The idea that I would accept a position just for political gain undermines everything I stand for,” Obi said, dismissing suggestions that he would agree to play a subordinate role in the proposed merger. “My coalition is against suffering, not for power. Politics should be about serving the people and solving their problems, not seeking positions,” he stated.

Obi’s remarks come amid growing tensions among his base, many of whom have rallied behind his message of reform, transparency, and people-centered governance. The idea of him stepping back into a vice-presidential role—as he did in 2019 when he ran alongside Atiku under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—was seen by many of his loyalists as a step backward.

Reaffirming his political philosophy, Obi explained that his motivation comes from a desire to alleviate poverty, tackle hunger, and improve access to healthcare for Nigerians. He also highlighted the importance of investing in the country’s youth, particularly through education.

“My concern is about the children of this country, their future, and their access to quality education,” Obi asserted. “That is what drives my political participation—not the ambition to hold office for its own sake.”

The statement appears to close the door, at least for now, on any formal partnership between Obi and Atiku. It also reinforces Obi’s position as a political figure focused more on policy and people than political positioning. For many of his ers, Obi’s rejection of the vice-presidential offer is seen as a reaffirmation of his integrity and commitment to transformative leadership.

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, questions about strategic alliances and coalitions will likely persist. However, Obi’s message is clear: any alliance must prioritize the well-being of Nigerians over personal or party interests.

He MUST deputise Atiku at the ballot.

His bank owes Billions and this is his last roll of the dice.

Obi needs to do the needful.
Stop joking around.

Become VP under atiku, and kick out the drug dealer.

Stop these unnecessary politics of idealism in a country that is not idealistic, and where politicians like tinubu have no scruples and can play to the lowest common denominator.

Northerners are looking for a reason to vote against tinubu, give them one.

Anything other than an atiku/obi ticket is a waste of time.

I think Atiku should retire from this his wild goose chase . His ambition to be president has been a major blocker to getting good leaders to rule in this country. Playing the hands of time since his ambitions is either he is ing a problem or blocking way for a good person to rule .

Whether he runs as VP or he runs on his own, it makes no difference!

He is playing a game after the final whistle has been blown!

All this is medicine after death. The opportunity was in 2023 and they blew it!

APC owned EFCC since 2015, if you’re correct about him looting Anambra, do you think APC wouldn’t have used EFCC to chase him out of Nigeria ?

Obi might be guilty of other things but stealing is not part of it, efcc haven’t found a pin that can be traced back to him.

Don’t allow your hatred make you sound like a fool, obi is not the problem, even if obi s APC today and Tinubu decides to hand over to him in 2031, you won’t still him, rather you’ll go against APC that you’re worshipping today.

Obi is not your problem, you just hate his tribe…

I don’t care about who wins 2027, I only pity Nigerians still living in Nigeria hoping that something good happens.

Obi is not ready to be president.
Obi has always been a boy. When will he be a man?
Only a coalition has a chance in driving Tinubu out of Aso Rock.
