Over the past week, Lagos has faced a wave of online criticism as residents took to social media to report persistent unpleasant odors in various parts of the city.

The complaints sparked widespread debate about the state’s waste management systems and environmental policies, with many calling for immediate action to address the issue.

Now, the Sanwo-Olu-led government has come out to set the record straight, clarifying that the challenges are part of the city’s ongoing evolution toward becoming a cleaner, more sustainable megacity. Lagos government addresses 'smelly' criticisms In a detailed statement, the government emphasized that Lagos is not “smelling” but evolving, with significant efforts underway to modernize waste management and improve environmental conditions.

it was worst under Tinubu when he was governor. Fashola came and sanitized everywhere. Ambode's impact on sanitation wasn't felt because he took Fashola's glory. Sanwolu's istration is lagging behind on sanitation after starting well.
One of the major causes of dirtiness in Lagos is open defecation. If you think I'm lying, take a trip to PPL bus stop along Lagos-Badagry expressway way just before Okokomaiko. The obnoxious open defecation going on in that area calls for emergency. The defecation is right on the open area between the two roads.
The day I crossed the express road, I nearly died of suffocation.

I think Ambode suspended the then PSP operators towards the end of his 1st term and brought in a foreign company which operated for a short while till he lost his second term bid.

In 1972, Lagos was described as the dirtiest capital city in the world. In 2025, they have used tribalism and division to divert you from the real issues. Mega city indeed. Both residents and governments are to blame.

I hope authorities step up to their responsibility and stop these mindless blame game. This is an inspiring video from Bangladesh where the youth decided to clean up the city. They have corrupt and irresponsible politicians who like to the buck. It starts with you and I, we are all responsible for taking care of our environment.

Heard Kigali is the neatest City In Africa.

You know what's funny? Let me share a clean joke. grin

In Rwanda, every last Saturday of the month, from 8am to 11am, everyone participates in what is called UMUGANDA. It is mandatory d failure to participate will earn you a fine.

Does it sound familiar?

My own people in Lagos cancel am because of rights and they want to make money grin
You can't lock people up to clean
You can't do this
We are not in military rule.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5NirEFQdTk?

You see am?

I don't like to say this but once Nigerians start to hear about something, they want to overdo it. Rwanda needs to be careful with my people because in their stupidity, they love to spoil their own and praise other people when other people are looking up to them🤡 Having a clean environment is not rocket science, we just like to indulge in dirty behavior.

Watch them turn it into a tribal post when we are talking about environment.

I think Ambode suspended the then PSP operators towards the end of his 1st term and brought in a foreign company which never operated till he lost his second term bid.

Here is the problem. Ambode went with a Local Government manager sense to govern Lagos and this was how he tackled waste. If you well, within the first 100 days, he did something called tarring inner roads or something like that. His biggest mistake was to elevate local government to state government level after Fashola had created a working system as an .

What is an irony is that Ambode started his public service career at Lagos State Waste Disposal Board (now LAWMA) as ant Grade II in November 1985. He then went on to be AG of Local Government Councils.
It was during Ambode's time the larger public got to know that the PSP contractors are political contractors too and he wanted to cancel it. They fought back.

Beyond Ambode, local government and municipalities around the world manage waste but the corrupt system we are using in Lagos and Nigeria will keep taking us back to the sewage. The state has no business managing street waste, they should do something Fashola was about to make LAWMA do until Ambode came in and changed it. If you are on third mainland, you will see LAWMA building and Fashola started talking about how to treat waste, renew and recycle. Bode should have left trash for LAWMA but the unnecessary competition to cancel Fashola caused the state problems. It was also under Ambode they stopped the monthly sanitation program, something I think Lagos really needs. At least, you would have known your neighbors on that Saturday. That exercise was a covert security exercise but we threw it into the trash in the name of freedom and making money. I feel the Rwandans saw the beauty of the sanitation exercise and now they are selling it to show how Rwanda became clean.

We went from thinking big to thinking small

This is another example of why I don't believe in the lies they tell us about master plan. If there was a plan, they would have been consistent and self correct whenever it goes wrong. What we have now is PAYG, Play As You Go.

Yes, it was the suspension of the Private sector partnership with his government that led to the waste management disaster. The new waste disposal company he brought in couldn't work at the capacity of the PSP leading to heaps and heaps of garbage all over the streets and roads. His unwilling to work with the blueprint put in place cost him his 2nd term bid

Okoko too far sef. First gate bus stop, right on the railway track being constructed, you’ll see people during day and night times defecating into the drainage systems.

Ambode stopped being governor since 2019. This man there now has spent almost 6 years as governor. Why the hell are we still blaming Ambode?

Fashola reshaped Lagos in his first 4 years. Sanwo Olu is a big failure and a mess. His appointees are bigots that do not tackle issues but rather engage in banters on twitter when called out.

I think it's an unfair comparison because the population of Lagos grows faster than that of any other city in Nigeria.

I am glad that new opportunities are opening in Abuja. Politicians should be intentional about development. Every region in Nigeria should have a Lagos-like city.
