The article failed to highlight the causes of HBP/Hypertension such as lifestyle choices like alcoholism and substance misuse, genetics, and underlying medical conditions like kidney problems.

While the report may be true, the names quoted seem manufactured. We didn't see the readings. Just some random names and the fact that they are hypertensive. Is it stage 1,2 or whatever? Journalism is beyond this

In Lagos State, If you live on the mainland and have your office on the island and drive yourself everyday to work e.g Iyana Ipaja to VI, Check your BP, it will definitely not be normal.

Work related stress alone in Lagos State is a major contributory factor in BP in Lagos State.

Very very true. The traffic situation in Lagos alone contributes to high bp.

I know a colleague some years back that died from high bp. This dude leaves his house at Sango Ota as early as 4am every day for Victoria Island and gets back home around 11pm at night, he became a skeleton. I warned him to leave his house at Sango Ota and rent a self con on the island to help his health(he kept saying he cannot leave the house he built). Sad situation undecided

Almost every young male I know watches soccer. How many of them have touched soccer balls since primary school? Go out to a field and practice what you see Ronaldo do. Perform some press-ups, run, do air squats and handstand press-ups. Handstand press-ups are like weight lifting for the human heart. Shadow box and throw random kicks while at it. Work up a sweat. Run in place. Fitness is not hard, creating excuses is easier. Stretch. The activity promotes blood flow in the circulatory system. If anything, exercise is a deliberate means of forcing blood around the body.

Work-related stress is one of the things causing hypertension in Nigeria, especially in Lagos. Commuting from mainland everyday is a silent predisposing factor. During my 9-5 job, I peaked 135/88. But since I left paid employment more than 9 years ago, I haven't exceeded 125/80. The last result showed 118/78.

Hard times is significant contributor of BP and its sister ailments especially with young adults

Some of the cause of BP is pressure, work, family, financial, domestic, emotional pressure just name it.
Another cause is diet, our food is full of sodium, some of us eat anyhow, not even considering our health.
Another, lack of exercise, some of us will sit morning till evening, our next point of movement is the sleeping position. we don't exercise our body, especially the heart.
The first step to deal with BP is to reduce your body weight, your BMD must be on check by exercising, your cholesterol level must be on check also.
Your diet, don't just eat because you want to eat, you have to check what you eat.
They are many natural roots & harps that you can use to manage HBP.

Please be serious with it o. Don't joke with death. If because of finance, get onboard an HMO. It will ease you the financial burden.

We consume too much salt and maggi

True talk. Our food is laden with Salt, Maggi, Ajinomoto and Palm Oil (a leading cause of heart problems).

Then top that with the amount of meat we eat (Nkwobi, Isi-ewu etc) and that's before factoring in snacks, sugary drinks, condensed milk, alcohol, pepper soup, point and kill and suya.

By the time you look at a plate of Eba, Egusi and assorted Meat you are looking at multiples of the total recommended daily calories (2,500 for men and 2,000 calories for women) and if you eat 3 times a day, it compounds the issue.

Unlike oyinbo food wey you go fit read for a pack of sandwich say na 450 calories and then plan your total daily meals to be under 2,500 calories, Naija meals eaten per person may turn out to be more than 5,000 calories per day and we no believe in portion sizes for Naija.

High blood pressure should have no business with young people.

When you put yourself through so much peer pressure, this is the result.

Or when you marry a jobless somebody!

A lot of people are hypertensive without knowing. Early detection helps a lot.

I know two people who died as a result of cardiac arrest last year, one was in self denial of being hypertensive and died another could not afford her drugs and died afterwards.
sad

This is actually scary, but it makes sense. The way young people are stressed out these days—work wahala, no rest, junk food, zero exercise—it’s not surprising that more of us are getting high BP.

I think it’s time we start taking small steps. Like, checking our blood pressure once in a while, cutting down on salty and processed food, drinking more water, and just trying to get better sleep. Even walking more instead of sitting all day can help.

We don’t have to overhaul everything at once, but little by little, we can do better. Health really no be something to joke with.
