Because this same yam was what my wife bought and prepared this morning in Benin city. The yam was bought for 3,500 naira.
It's still very expensive for that amount compared to same yam been sold for 800 naira few years back. But I think why it's expensive it's because Nigeria do not import it. Any Agric products not imported are always cost because Nigeria farmers are wicked and heartless. This same yam, if federal government open border to the importation of it, Nigeria farmers would crash their prices almost immediately. It's the same thing they are doing with garri

There was even 70naira tubers back then.

I don't know where they're selling average sized yams for 9-10k, the ones I got about w weeks ago are 3 slender ones for 6k (2k each)

It's the time of the year when yams are scarce and expensive. By July/August, new yams will start becoming available. If you and some people can money to buy yams from the abokis that sell in heaps in mile 12 market, it makes a lot of sense.

Yam is expensive all year round, even in Aug - Oct it will still be expensive.

The problem is insecurity, only few farmers dare enter bush to farm since 2015.

Things are expensive.
Sweet potatoes I used to call sapa food.
I'll but 500 and it lasts the whole,
1500 for the month may end up spoiling.

Here you are saying 10k for 2 weeks. Omoh naira don spoil

here is an easy solution, go and gather yam heads and replant them , in a few month you will have free yam

Sweet potato dey cheaper sha but it get short shelf life and it dey tire person to chop. Even if you do am chips, it go still tire you.

Yam fit last for house sweet potato.
