The Benue State University (BSU) has been renamed Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University

Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi, has been officially renamed to Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, MOAUM.

This decision follows the age of a law by the Benue State House of Assembly, which was signed into law by the Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on December 30, 2024.

Very Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu (12 June 1945 – 20 November 2005) was a distinguished Nigerian Catholic priest, educator, and politician, renowned for being the first Catholic priest elected as a state governor in Nigeria.

Adasu ventured into politics and was elected as the second Executive Governor of Benue State on 2 January 1992 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His tenure was marked by significant contributions, including the founding of Benue State University on 27 December 1991, reactivating and upgrading the College of Education in Oju, and initiating the Tarka Foundation in honor of Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka. He also started projects like BENCO roof tile and the Katsina-Ala fruit juice company

The name sounds somehow but I am still okay with it considering the positive contribution of Moses Adasu for the short period he was governor, I hope another governor will not wake up tomorrow and rename any of our state tertiary institution after Akume or Ortom

Madness, renaming existing schools known by people is crazy. If you want to name a monument or something after someone, why not start a projects and do it. This is misplaced priority. Misplaced priorities. Typical tacky attitude of Nigerian politicians who have little or nothing to offer.

Rather than equip the university for research, cutting edge academic service delivery for outstanding student performance, they chose to major in the most inane things. Nigerian politicians don't rate their citizens one bit.

The Reverend father knows nothing about branding. This renaming makes no sense at all, even the abbreviation sounds nonsensical.

Misplaced priority at its peak

Brand value is nothing without the name. After more than 30 years of existence a brand value has been created with the name BSU (Benue State University). Why change the name?

What should have been done?
Name the the Senate building or any other relevant structure after him.

Focusing on improved academic curriculum, staff welfare and learning environment should be the priority.
