North or northerner is not ethnicity, it is a geographical location. The meaning of north in Yoruba is Ariwa, in Hausa it is Arewa. A kwara man that called himself Arewa or Northerner is just being diplomatic, trying to play save without hurting both side.

The new nnpcl boss never denied being a Yoruba man, he is just telling us his geopolitical zone.

You will notice that it is common for Kwara people especially from Ilorin to describe themselves as a Northerner or Arewa they no within themselves that they are Yorubas. The Ilorins that are ethnically Nupe or Fulani do boldly declare their ethnicity but the Yorubas do prefer to describe themselves using region probably to avoid further arguments ( like why is Emir ruling you, how was Afonja killed, who is Sheu Alimi) they don't like to be talking about those things.

Interestingly, all civilian governors that rule Kwara state are Yorubas from Ilorin, except one from Oro. That will tell you that Ilorin is a Yoruba land.

The man is Yoruba man from North Central. Yoruba are indigenous to Kwara state. He will say he is a northerner because Kwara is in north central.
