The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has made a startling disclosure about a polytechnic in the Southeast region, which receives billions of naira in annual intervention funds despite having a remarkably small student population of only 30.

Executive Secretary of the Fund, Sonny Echono, stated this on Monday in Abuja at the 2025 one-day strategic interactive workshops for heads of institutions, bursars, and heads of procurement of TETFund beneficiary institutions.

Describing the situation as shocking and embarrassing, Echono revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is already investigating the matter.

Although the Executive Secretary did not disclose the name of the polytechnic, he pointed out that it was established four years ago.

“I was so embarrassed when it was brought to my attention that a particular polytechnic in the South East that has been there for four years has only 30 students.

“The Southeast of all places where if you go to any state including the Northern region, you will see students from the Southeast in those institutions, yet this was put at their doorstep, and they have only 30 students and they have been accessing all their annual disbursements.

“We (TETFund) are disbursing billions (to the institution). And who are the people they are spending the money on? We describe it as waste of money. It is so bad that EFCC is on it. I was shocked and I didn’t realise that it was that bad,” he said.

He cautioned that institutions that fail to effectively access, utilize, or for funds, or those not meeting enrollment and academic performance standards, risk losing eligibility for TETFund’s programmes.

He clarified that the policy’s purpose is to protect the integrity and effectiveness of the Fund’s interventions, not to punish institutions.

His words: “Let me be clear: institutions that consistently fail to access, utilize, or retire funds appropriately, or that fall short of enrollment and academic performance thresholds, risk being delisted as TETFund beneficiary institutions.”

According to him, the Fund has allocated over N70 billion for alternative power sources to beneficiary institutions this year.

This, he explained, will come in the form of solar and hybrid power.

The Guardian reports that the Fund allocates significant funds to tertiary institutions annually, with polytechnics typically receiving around N1.165 billion, comprising N1.015 billion as direct disbursement and N150 million for zonal intervention.

In their separate goodwill messages, the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) lauded the Fund for its landmark achievements and contributions to the development of tertiary education in Nigeria, highlighting its positive impact on the country’s educational landscape.

Nigeria runs on tribal hate. The managers of tetfund just realised how to steal money and mislead EFCC, just find any news on south east, embelish it with lies and sprinkle it with a dose of controversy and boom, you will shake the nation with tribal bigotry. The police, EFCC, army and even civil defense will be falling over themselves to destroy everything, and, and,and the school doesn't even have a name grin grin grin

TETFUND doesn't operate in private institutions, meaning what the Minister is saying is not true.

There has been no Federal or State Polytechnic established in the last four years in the SE excepting the one in Ngodo-Isuochi established in 2022 and only started itting students in January this year.

I hope to be wrong.

“I was so embarrassed when it was brought to my attention that a particular polytechnic in the South East that has been there for four years has only 30 students."
This comes to about 2 billion naira alloted per student annually. Smh.

I suspect that it is the year 2022-founded Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, located in Enugu State https://fedpod.edu.ng/ yet most people from the Southeast call Northerners parasites. Smh.

This information aligns with the incontrovertible data from JAMB, INEC registration, NIN, Internet use data, Satellite images that the population of Southeast is low and has always been inflated for political and corruption reasons.

Low population plus small land mass and huge allocations should translate to high wealth per capita but in the South-East with low population and small land mass receiving huge multibillion allocations every month, it is poverty galore. This polytechnic fraud is just one of such evidence of the national economic sabotage going on in the South-East by same people of the South-east denying their own people of prosperity, development and progress.

If you go to that polytechnic, there's nothing to show that FG invests roughly N2 billion per student in that school yet it's being managed by people from Southeast. Smh.

Everyone behind this alleged crime should be apprehended and prosecuted.

There is a whole population-inflation corruption industry behind inflation of the population of the South-East and it's led largely by the Igbo political elite enabled by a largely uninformed politically-disoriented followership. The Igbo leaders inflate their population to recieve huge allocations and attract FG infrastructures and when they recieve the money, these leaders enrich themselves corruptly and hide the money in their personal s then turn around to blame FG for lack of development in Igboland.

The billions that flow into the low-populated Southeast states as allocations, if well utilized, is enough to have turned the whole tiny land-mass Southeast with its low population into Dubai or Doha today!

Thank you Sir, this to me seems like sensational headlines to cause more tribal bigotry in the country. So many government institutions are now operating on tribal basis.

I was eager to see the name of the Polytechnic in the South East with only 30 students, but was disappointed.

The claim is clearly fake. There is no tertiary institution in the South East with such less number of students..

Established four years ago. This one was established in 2022.

Again, how can they be drawing subventions from TETFUND without itting students, same as FEDPOD.
