An Air Peace aircraft was forced to halt operations after it collided with an antelope while taxiing on the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, according to a footage obtained by News360 Nigeria

The incident, which resulted in the animal being crushed, left the aircraft classified as Aircraft on Ground (AOG) and caused disruptions to the airline’s scheduled flights.

Confirming the occurrence, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said through its Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, that such unexpected events are part of the operational challenges that sometimes lead to flight delays.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Achimugu explained, “Monitoring reports yesterday indicated that an Air Peace aircraft ran into a large antelope, decimating the animal and leaving the aircraft on ground.

As a result, flights meant to be operated by this aircraft would naturally be disrupted, even though engineers are on the ground to assess and fix the plane. engers waiting would naturally be infuriated.”

He added that while the incident was beyond Air Peace’s control, the airline is still responsible for promptly informing engers, issuing refunds when necessary, and providing care.

He warned that the NCAA would sanction the airline if it failed to meet its obligations.

A source close to Air Peace, while speaking with News360 Nigeria, clarified that the incident happened during landing and was immediately handled in line with aviation procedures.

“It happened upon landing. As an aviation procedure, the aircraft has been checked and fixed. It was not a big issue,” the source noted.

In the meantime, the NCAA has assured travelers of safety at the Abuja airport and promised to investigate how the animal found its way onto the runway, with a view to preventing a recurrence.

If it were to happen in Owerri or Enugu that an aeroplane hit a fowl, Enugu and Owerri, even Awka and Asaba airports will be closed for a year while they renovate the airport to stop that, all the poultry in Eastern Nigeria will be closed and any market selling chickens will be demolished immediately.

The only thing keeping Nigeria together is that politics of hate.

You don't even love yourself, how much more others. Haters hate the whole world, and they later choke on their hate.

Thank providence it didn't lead to loss of human life or fatal consequences. However, sorry poor Antelope. Life is just unfair.

Whether Airport on ground or airplane in heaven, this report is incomplete if we are not duly informed on what later happened to the antelope. Who carried it? Where was it carried to ? Who is cooking it and what is it being cooking even if it is cooked infact where is the antelope now?

I don't care about the antelope, after all in Nigeria cows are treated like first class citizens in Abuja. My question is how did a bush animal find its way into the airport runway

There was a time we used to have cows on the runway. Now, it's antelopes. Sorry antelope. Rangers International are called the Flying Antelope. I guess this antelope missed its way. It's Abuja.

There must be thick forest around the airport that accommodate these animals.

We need hunters to reduce their population to avoid antelope infested airport in Abuja.

Nnamdi Azikiwe Int Airport is surrounded by rocks and thick forest, it's at the outskirt of Abj hence the presence of wild animals.

Alligator and snakes are common within vast areas in Abj because of river/lakes here and there, thank you.

How did an antelope even manage to find it's way to the runway?

Assuming it was a much smaller plane such as a Cessna that ran into it the story would likely have been different undecided
