The deal took 3 years partly because India wanted free movement/greater number of visas for its students and workers which the UK under Boris Johnson, and subsequently, refused.

This deal apparently doesn't change the immigration requirements for Indian nationals, although I expect that those who qualify for visas may receive some preferential treatment, e.g quicker processing. They'll also be excluded from any future visa clampdowns such as the one recently announced for Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nigeria.

I'm not sure if they will pay IHS though, I think the company is usually responsible for paying the surcharge for its employees for the transfer period.

Lets see how it plays out. I can just see some firms setting up companies in India and then "transferring" workers to the UK en masse on sub-3 year contracts.

πŸ’― and probably not a scenario the govt has thought through in their eagerness to get the deal over the line.

Unless there is a cap in place (which I doubt), UK firms and Indian agencies stand to benefit massively at the expense of Indian workers and UK immigrant labour.

Why would a UK firm pay the ISC, employer NI (which has recently gone up significantly), CoS fees, UK wages, pension etc when they can easily subcontract a Data Analyst or health care worker from Delhi to come and work for them in the UK on an Indian salary or approx, and no NI fees, immigration paperwork etc for the UK employer - just a small commission paid to the Indian company/ agency. Interesting...

Only applies to temporary Indian transfers as they would be paying social security contributions in their own country - and vice versa with British transfers to India.

Similar arrangements already exist for transfers from the EU, US , Singapore and others

Interesting. The agreement also stipulates the same for British citizens working in India. What I'd like to find out is if the Indians coming this way under this deal will have access to the NHS on the same as all those who pay the full range of tax, whether permanent residents or on visas. This is not a good deal overall for the UK - reflecting the general lack of strength on their side. It'll make Indian workers proportionally cheaper to hire. I can see Reform already gearing up.

they should come up with a better plan or idea if they have any, let them show workings! like Goodenoch pointed out β€˜no be by cho cho cho’ if e easy make dem run am make we see!

Lol....the ratio of Brits wanting to work in India Vs Indians wanting to work in the UK will be in the region of 1: 1000 πŸ˜‚

It won't be long before the UK govt tries to renegotiate the of the deal or impose a cap.

So it's been "softly" confirmed that Indian expats/ intracompany transfer workers will still have to pay the NHS surcharge (or their company pays it for them).

There's still no official comms on this, in fact it's been noted that there's quite a large information gap around the of the deal, which hasn't done Labour any favours (yet again!) because their poor Comms has led to negative headlines and spurious debates that have soured the deal announcement. They need to look into employing Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former and very effective spin doctor.

Thanks. I gingerly dipped into the Torygraph this morning, all suited up in protective clothing, and they had an article on this, citing Reynolds.

Regarding Labour's comms efforts (or lack thereof); as a committed left-of-centre voter, it does nigh on drive one to despair. Especially the unforced errors like this one or the employer NI increase or VAT on private school fees. At this rate Farage will very very soon be parking his tanks in front of the whole of Victoria Street or wherever it is Labour HQ hangs its hat (I think I might be out of date, back in Cameron's time both Labour and the Tories were on the same street).

Blast.

Lol, add to that the mishandling of the winter fuel cuts and I'm surprised any staunch Labour voter has any hair left. I smell a U-turn coming.

I think Labour HQ is in Southwark.

On a slightly tangential note, what do you make of the timing between the FTA announcement and India striking Pakistan? Curious or pure coincidence?

" Poor" Pakistan though - imagine being pulled into a fight with your neighbour when they've just gained a new international, influential ally.
Will Starmer be able to remain neutral when he's now much more closely aligned with India?

Lol. You got it right in one. No such thing as coincidence here. The UK will unfortunately be reduced to making vague noises as India does its thing. The US no longer needs Pakistan as it did when it was in Afghanistan, so the US government will most likely do likewise.
Goodenoch: 3:40am On May 08

Lol. For what its worth, these negotiations were started under Johnson and carried on by Sunak and now Starmer, so at some point Badenoch was involved therein and may rightfully claim some of the credit (if it is generally accepted by her side that its a good deal for the UK, of course).

Sleeper agent for reform party, ouch! πŸ˜‚

After Boris left, the Uk has been managed by kids until now. Trump has even tweeted that the US is about to land a deal with the Uk. All these deals thing started under the Torries govt until they were hijacked by culture war mongers and bigots. What a disgrace! Bring ideas to move the economy forward hell no but to entertain us with how many years to get ilr.

Is it not a shame that’s it’s a Labour Party landing deals with conservatives run economies like the US and India?

Well done Starmer πŸ‘ on the Trade/Tariff Mitigation deal. Not the best/most comprehensive deal or a FTA but it could be a lot worse.

Pros for Britain

-First country to do a deal with the US.
9 years ago after Brexit, Obama warned that we would be back of the line on a US deal, but we've ended up being the first lol

- Removal of tariffs on steel and aluminium from 25% to 0%

- Reduction of tariffs on UK car exports from 27.5% to 10%

- Possible preferential treatment on future pharmaceutical and Film tariffs (fingers crossed)

- competitive advantage for the UK over other countries that still face higher tariffs.

- No mention of digital services tax on US companies being reduced

Cons
- We've reduced tariffs on many US imports e.g. ethanol while the US has increased its tariffs e.g. 2.5 to 10% on UK car imports; 10% still remains on most of our products e.g. agricultural products

- Ceiling of 100,000(at 10%) on UK car imports which is the current level - no room for growth

- Big ❓ around lowering of UK food standards. How will this work if we are opening up to US beef, chicken etc

We've also got the EU reset deal to look forward to in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully that goes well and we can move much closer to the EU

Flew via Amsterdam in April; I didn't have a transit visa. However I need to state that I have a valid Canadian visa but I honestly don't know if that made a difference.

I think one doesn't need a transit visa if you have American/Canadian visa on your port. However, I would love to hear from people that have travelled with KLM to Nigeria with just UK evisa before I go ahead with my booking.

I know friends who have flown to Nigeria via KLM in recent months, and they had no issues, so you're good with the E-visa. Having a valid US or Canadian visa is also a valid reason. I will always encourage anyone with a UK resident visa to acquire a US or Canadian visa, as it also helps.

Hi, I know this question comes up often, but I’ve seen conflicting information. From September 2025 (autumn term), will parents on skilled worker visas be eligible for the 15 or 30 hours of childcare funding? Thanks in advance

Depends on where you live and your child's age.

If you live in England? - you are eligible for 15 hours universal funding after your child turns 3.

The extended funded hours depends on the same eligibility criteria as before, such as income and immigration status.

Why not use branch? You get 17% APR for scheduled investment & 10% APR for ongoing investments......

An example of ongoing investment, 6M deposit, gives you 10K+ every week, paid out weekly....

Scheduled investment is paid out, at the end of term......
bigtt76(f): 11:23am On May 10
Ha 😳 10k every week? Sounds good really. I do mutual funds (money market funds) with ARM (any other funds manager also that offer such) and I think they offer more.
