You can find people renting either rooms or apartments for short term.

Though I'd say book a hotel for border purposes at least for first day/night

Please consider your family safety first. Those areas you mentioned in NY are not very safe for this type of low budget online accommodation link you are looking for.

Consider Airbnb where the owners of the apartments have been well vetted by the company.
