You think this woman got 6yrs behind bars without any collaborating evidence of her crime? Considering her position and her work achievements in legal field i don't think that the British legal system will throw a high profile woman behind bars because of an unsubstantial evidence.

I had a friend that brought a maid from Nigeria, she was with them for over 7 years..... They treated her almost better than they treated themselves and their kids.......

The Judas in maid, still struck husband and wife..... They both went down for 36 & 49 months respectively....... 🙄

Exactly my thoughts.

How they said they treated her and how they treated her when other people were around to see very likely differed from how they treated her when there were no witnesses.

Not discounting that some people can just 'turn Judas', anyway, but I'm skeptical of anyone who imports a houseboy/girl (I think calling it a 'maid' relationship is dressing it up) in the first place.

The singular issue that makes this people bend, is how do I make my papers permanent? And to achieve this, they would cook all sort of lies........

My point is...whatever lies they cooked up has to be collaborated, the maid must have an evidence, is she getting paid and how much? Enrol in school? Allowed to go out with friends? The court will not take her 'lies' without verifiable evidence to back up her allegation

You are not far from the truth, we all know how maids are treated in Nigeria, so when they bring one here...she is toast, i don't see any Nigerian couple here paying house maid brought from Nigeria minimum wage, given days off..let a lone allowed to enjoy the freedom like their kids.

How does this sound, when a girl you discussed all with in Nigeria, went to her Nigerian parents house........ Claims she was Ivorian and exported to Nigeria...... Let me not say too much.....

, we had this discussion a few years ago, and my position was NEVER to go down this route, no matter how desperate.....

She should have simply applied for a domestic visa, but she tried to game the system...... The system showed her that any shortcuts, could cut you short..... 🤣😂

Many of us don't/won't even stay up to 7yrs before getting ILR after which you can just walk away. Why should it take 7+ years and Govt intervention in their case? Was the love so massive that the plan was for her to be a lifetime maid? A plan they won't want for their children.

There are more Filipinos and Indian house helps/ house keepers in the UK but we don't see them making headlines. They work for some of the wealthiest people/ families. example footballers, politicians and diplomats. There are ed agencies that would provide you house help within and outside the UK. Make use of them to avoid story that touch. Or take your children to childminders. Life is simple but people just complicate it for the sake of saving few £

And this the exact reason, the maids seeks permanency (once they see kids are becoming independent) + no perceived settled plans from their bosses..... 😁😂

..and when you do?...treat them like human beings else.....

It doesn't matter how you treat them. It's third parties outside your home that will tell them what to do.

That's the sure route for right to remain in the UK for them

Best to get domestic work visa and keep it as such

Anything to make the soup sweeter...no matter what they paid her fair or not any help you bring has no allegiance to you doesn't even owe you loyalty

Even with full of Nigerian parents they will Judas you straight.

It wasn't a loophole; it was the default position from the creation of the CW that allowed most people from the CW to move freely to the UK. Similar to EU freedom of movement, but with automatic citizenship. They then changed the law, similar to Brexit, to make it more difficult to acquire British citizenship.

Not everyone who came to the UK was part of the Windrush - many moved to the UK long before the Windrush ship landed, some moved as citizens in later years.

All this to obsfucate the well known history of how a good chunk of your people came here.

You do realise that the challenges they faced can't be hidden. The local populace saw them as taking advantage of a loophole with the government increasingly doing more to curtail arrivals manytimes specifically targeting specific groups especially those from the Carribibean. Most of these ultimately resulted in Tatcher putting an end to citizenship by birth. Even today Many still regard the likes of Kemi as the last beneficiaries of that.

I have always found it interesting how descendants of people who were hounded and faced significantly worse discrimination than recent migrants in their days turn around and be fierce arbiters of who is worthy to be here or not. Some oddly think themselves to be of a higher stock which I find laughable. History is there to instruct.

Why didn't she seek a ed homehelp who has clearly defined duties, pay, e.t.c? Truth be said, such laws are the bedrock of a fairer society

Its not just an African issue. Even Indians are not left out. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3ggl6pe52eo

the maids are doing it for the future of their unborn kids. 🤣🤣🤣

Even in Nigeria sef I no get maid, on principle (because I don't like the concept, and cos elemi esu ni 99.99% anyway), na for abroad wey 'future of unborn kids' take center stage I go come get maid....When I no mad

It's common sense and I agree with you that due to perception of the abroad, anyone no matter how angelic is almost certain to get betrayed by a maid brought from Nigeria/Africa. Why go through the hassle to import some stranger from Nigeria to pay them minimum wage as some have said here when you can just get someone there in the UK and pay them same? It's cos they wanted to save cost. Unfortunately no matter how nice they play, they will ultimately expose themselves to a sharp knife in the back like your friends, cos hey everyone including imported maids want to 'secure the future of their unborn kids' in this obodo oyinbo and will drown anyone drownable to get it. Na you go smart and not expose yourself make dem use your head break coconut, cos you want to save pounds

Hehe... Canada was quite interesting. It appeared the conservative party there was too aligned to Trump, riding his wave and then struggled to find their foot when he went rogue. UK is different in the sense that Trump is not liked but the populace still leans right.

There are things that aren't worth worrying over. Just like with PMB, you can't convince certain cohorts.

If folks want something radical, let them have it. Afterall, if the economy becomes better, we'd all be beneficiaries.

The truth be told, if I was an imported maid...... After exposing me to a working system in the west, I have looked after all your kids, they are now fully grown and you're about to toss me out......... 😁😂

Happy Sunday Y'all

it's been 6 months since my friend applied for his post study visa, and it hasn't been granted. His work place have given him till 9th of this month to provide proof to work documentation and failure to do so could result to getting a sack.

He said he has paid a lawyer, can this move result to anything positive? He said the lawyer will write letters to the work place etc
I don't want him spending money in vain.

Thank you

This is going to be a bit long as I want to say it all.

Since it appears that both of you are very religious and hold the pastor in high regard, I suggest you go back to the pastor and give him the full, unedited details of these challenges.

It doesn't appear that there's anyone else who can play that neutral mediator role between you both. It will be impossible for any mediation to work well if you're only telling half the things bothering you though - it'll just lead to pent-up resentment.

I've been married for a way shorter time than you have so I'm far from an expert - hopefully you can get advice from others who are more experienced. I wish you the best though.

I think it's a good idea to get a lawyer. Not sure how much the job means to him but my assessment is that there's a chance getting a lawyer involved might help and that's worth the expense. It may also not change anything but I think it's definitely worth the punt.

The more urgent thing to do might be to write to the company explaining that there's no danger that they are violating the laws by employing him because he has a pending application. That's going to be their highest concern.

What I would do is to have the lawyer the HO first and then write a mail to the workplace restating the legal position above while attaching the latest correspondence to the HO from his lawyer, with evidence of his original applications and any other follow-ups to the workplace, so they are aware that he has taken urgent steps to clarify things.

I question any Nigerian here traveling home to get a house help, you are looking for cheap and cheerful house help to over worked and under paid, you will not treat her the same way you treat a house help from here.

The legal system will not just accept her allegation without an evidence. If she got nothing on you the worst she will do is run away to other part of the UK.

If this news spread, people may come forward 😀... because there definitely will be more of this kind of thing. The victims just need someone to give them courage.

Agreed.

Unfortunately this has been going on for decades, even with high profile victims like Mo Farah ( the Olympic marathon runner). He was brought to England from Somalia as a child and made to work as a domestic servant by the family that brought him in. His story is very moving.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62123886.amp

Part of the reason why the Home Office does not allow "niece" and "nephew" dependants- too many people looking to exploit children/vulnerable people.
