Dozens of traders and their customers narrowly escaped death on Friday when a enger train derailed along the Abeokuta-Odeda-Ibadan Highway, blocking the busy road and causing a major traffic disruption.

Eyewitnesses told Saturday PUNCH that the train went off its tracks at Kila, missing the crowded roadside stalls by mere inches.

“It was a close call. If the train had veered slightly more, many of us would have been crushed,” one of the traders said.

The cause of the derailment has not been confirmed as of press time, but authorities have moved to manage the resulting gridlock.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps advised motorists, especially those transiting the corridor, to avoid the affected route and use alternatives like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the agency said it was working with the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigerian Railway Corporation to clear the obstruction and restore normal traffic flow.

He said, “In view of the blockage of the Abeokuta-Odeda-Ibadan Highway caused by a train at Kila, motorists are advised to take alternative routes. TRACE, the Police, and FRSC are in liaison with the NRC to resolve the situation.”

Efforts to reach the NRC spokesperson, Mahmood Yakub, for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages were not returned.

Na wa ooo. I’ve always thought this as the best transportation in Nigeria. But train derailing, bandits attacking trains, trains stopping in the middle of nowhere, people vandalizing the tracks are all unbelievable

Why do people still sell on or close to the open track?

Nigerian journalists have the worst services in the world. Common, a single picture, they can not to substantiate their claims, yet they will give it a very useless sensational headlines. Everything is about third party reports from phone calls without much verification. Shioo.

That’s the ruinous legacy of 10 years incompetence, corruption and cluelessness by APC balablu chochocho propagandist liars.

Is there any aspect of our national life that is not worse since 2015? Any one aspect

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”

They are not creating jobs, normally there should be cameras at about every 1or 2 kilometers and there should be people monitoring the camera on 8 hours shift round the clock. Little innovations like this is why the western words have many jobs available for their citizens. That is common sense

Too much corruption and looting since the Lagos master planner made the Abacha a-looter associate president from Oshiomhole’s Assembly of Past Crooks, APC.

The 2018 Rating by Transparency International placed Nigeria at 148th position out of 180 countries. Nigeria was improving over the years under the previous government, until Buhari got elected as president, things became worse.

There is a difference between fact and fiction. We need to face facts, Buhari is worse than GEJ when it comes to fighting corruption, at least that’s what the facts prove.

Most of us believed there was corruption under Goodluck Jonathan’s Government. I agree with those who did, there was corruption, but not as bad as it is today under Mohammadu Buhari.

In 2012, Nigeria was placed at 139th position, In 2014, Nigeria gained 3 steps and was placed at 136th position. Under Buhari, Nigeria has lost many positions down to 148th.

There’s no further proof needed that corruption has worsened under Buhari’s government compared to previous years.

Thank God for their lives.

If I talk now, their ers will accuse me of being a political bandit like them.

In all honesty this boils down to poor maintenance and infrastructural supervision/Integrity checks of the train and tracks.

We know natural phenomenon is possible but in Nigeria's case I throw it down to negligence.

I hope the derailment was not as a result of rail tracks which were vandalized by criminals angry

Statistically, it's far safer than road transportation. And no, it's not cheaper than road. It's only cheaper than air.

Train is the safest.
Note that it was the busy road filled with traders by the roadside that were being targeted by the derailing. Inside the train, the engers stayed safe.
