Can Nigerians Afford Pay-Per-View TV? (13404 Views)

Wait! Where is this propaganda coming from? Pay per view? Hey! Stop mixing things up. Nobody is asking Multichoice the parent company of Nigeria DSTV and GOTV for pay per view. Yes, Multichoice already knows Nigerians demand - pay per channel, period. See the attach screenshot taking from the Multichoice - GOTV website.

It's not that simple. TV is not telecommunications. They don't operate the same way

Exactly! As already mentioned, everything else has to be in place for the PPV model to really work - uninterrupted power, internet, etc. Couple all that with the cost of each PPV event, most just won't be able to afford it. Of course, folks can chip in to cover the cost, and then get together and watch the event. KURUNMI1: 1 Like |

Are we spending dollars, please stop this misinformation. How will a program such a live match be more expensive than thier package. Though it might not be economically sound to be on the PPV for extended periods but it's going to be a good deal to some people.

Average Nigerians still buy bags or half bag of rice. Look around you, it's happening. Forget the media noise.

Some think PPV = paying only for what you watch. Lol, it’s actually paying per event. If that happens, get ready to spend more than your yearly subscription in just a few months.

Nigerians and wishes. I’d advise we stick to our plan. Pay per view isn’t going to be cheap. The question is can you afford Band A Nepa bill? Then ask if you can afford PPV lol🤣 . just stick to what you have now |
biggz82: 3:17pm On Apr 29 |
How much did DSTV pay you for this, all is just to make people believe DSTV is cheap. Anything you like write we are done with DSTV |
Omojay08: 3:18pm On Apr 29 |
In markets where pay-per-view is standard, audiences are accustomed to paying for each event. But in Nigeria, we have grown used to a single, flat fee. Don’t replace that with a new pricing model that charges more while offering less.

I think there is a problem with the whole analysis of the PPV Concept. Are you telling me that PPv simply means paying additional fees just to open a particular channel that promises to cover a certain event, then after the event, the additional payments expire and the normal subscription continues, or making the whole package dependent on how the subscription was used? Like we have with our network providers? Imagine recharging your MTN sim with 1k right now and before 7 am tomorrow everything is gone regardless of it's usage? If they sell a bouquet for us, why not allow it to run the same way our airtime runs inside our sim? You think it can not be possible in Nigeria? AnonPoet: |

MultiChoice is literally helping Nigerians save money. They absorb insane sports rights fees so you can watch content at a fraction of PPV costs. The alternative? Spending triple on just a few matches.

If the services rendered by multi choice is not another branch of telecommunications sir, what then is telecommunications sir? I may not have an idea because I was attending animal diversity class when they were teaching them telecommunications in the other lecture hall. DammyAdeb16: 2 Likes |

What you don't factor in is that those shows have already been consolidated into the price package which is why bouquet are exorbitantly high/even overcharged as far as Nigeria is concerned. It will be too much of day light robbery to now charge separately for exclusivity otherwise tagged Pay-per-view. Nonetheless, if DSTV is charging it's package for #5000, and want an extra #2000 charge for an exclusive event such as the Champions League final, Nigerians will gladly pay. But when they are already charging close to #50k for channels, what justification would they have to charge separately for a single event viewing? |
OJojossy10: 3:29pm On Apr 29 |
So Multi choice is operating at a loss in Nigeria then? Because according to this your comment, they are "HELPING" Nigerians. That means they are paying a fraction of the actual cost while Nigerians are paying the rest? I may be blind to their help so far o... enlighten me pls Kngg: 1 Like |

Dstv and their staff can continue to dciv themselves. What we want is a special kind of tarrif plan where data allocated for subscription burns as we watch. Anything outside this is not acceptable to us 1 Like |

Even in the UK and the U.S fans complain about PPV cost. Now imagine bringing the model to Nigeria where the economy is already tight...the current subscription model is way more affordable

What Nigerians are asking for is pay as you watch not pay per view. Anyway most house holds don't subscribe anymore except the older people and family men who chose the lowest package for their children. Imagine 45k for dstv with repeated contents? Lol . The day data becomes cheaper or fiber to home becomes more accessible will be the end of dstv and co 3 Likes 1 Share |

AnonPoet:All your analysis is rubbish. The amount of fuel it will take to watch the final (for 90mins + 30mins extra time + penalty shootout) will not be more than 4 liters at most. You don't need 5k data, no matter the network provider to watch just a match. As for pay per view, Nigerians never asked for pay per view. What Nigerians are seeking is for DSTV to allow them select channels to pay for i.e if I want only sport, give me a sport bouquet. If I love movies and shows, give me an opportunity to select those channels and pay for it. Not giving me 130 channels to pay for when I only need 20 |
