I believe they endangered the lives of the engers by taking off with insufficient fuel. There are usually no petrol stations in the water, so once you're stranded there, you rely on luck to find another boat with extra fuel or you call for a refuelling boat which may not be anywhere nearby at the time. If a heavy vessel happens to , the waves can capsize the boat. Rain can also start falling, followed by wind, which can capsize the boat. Yes, they had life jackets, but those have been known to fail. Some engers will even wear them wrongly. Even when worn correctly, they can fail.

I have experienced similar scenario before. Finished an offshore operation outside Lagos bar. Since I couldn't wait for the covered boat to arrive, I took a speed boat and somewhere around Tin Can, the boat parked up midstream and it was already nightfall. It was a very scary and discomforting experience.

Called for another boat before the wackawickee boat captain got the engine revving again after 35 minutes of drifting amidst waves.
