The Enugu State Government has announced plans to construct a 135.5-kilometre standard gauge rail line that will connect major South-East cities to the Onne Port in Rivers State.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Obi Ozor, shared the update during an interview on Enugu Kwenu, a programme aired on Afia TV on Friday.

Ozor discussed the state’s ongoing transport plans and how the proposed rail line would boost economic growth.

He stated that the feasibility study for the project had been completed, noting that the state was working with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and some Chinese firms, while discussions with investors were ongoing to secure funding.

“The line we are about to build is state-owned. It is a 135.5km standard gauge line that connects Enugu to all major cities in the South-East. You are going to see a proper connection to Anambra through Ugwuoba, and a connection to Ebonyi through the Amechi Idodo axis. And of course, connections to Umuahia, Abia, and Owerri through the line that es through Nkanu West to Isiagu and goes all the way to Onne Port,” he said.

He also stated that the rail line was a major part of Enugu’s plan to become a trade and export hub.

“As part of turning Enugu State into a hub, rail is a critical component to enable the movement of agro-commodities from their sources all the way to the port for export and earning of foreign exchange,” he said.

He further noted that the region has a wealth of untapped natural resources such as coal, which require efficient transport.

“We have a lot of wealth locked beneath our soil, such as coal. We need to exploit them to generate significant revenue, and rail is critical to achieving this,” he added.

The planned railway will serve both engers and cargo. According to the commissioner, it will ease the movement of goods across the South-East and help reduce the pressure on Lagos ports.

He added that it would also the transportation of goods from nearby states like Delta.

The plan includes a new market station at the Holy Ghost Transport Terminal in Enugu, which will serve both engers and freight.

He also stated that the state is working on establishing a major inland container port to process agro-products for both the South-East and North-East regions.

While the Federal Government is extending its own rail project from Aba to Enugu within 24 months, Ozor explained that Enugu’s rail plan is different and entirely state-led.

He added that it aligns with the state’s long-term economic development goals.

This is commendable, in as much as Gov. Mbah is making such huge investment in the transport Sector, the city center still presents a terrible sight of traffic congestion, spots like Garki,HolyGhost,Abakpa do not look like a plus to the efforts of the state government. I someone I met who submitted an Excellent Traffic Management Blueprint to the Governors Office, but it didn't see the light of the day, probably the Governor wasn't interested.

Why will train go to abakaliki through Idodo which is in nkanu? and the one to Umuahia follow nkanu again boycotting Udi and Awgu which is closer to Umuahia?

I think Awgu was totally neglected by all the Governors in enugu especially Gburugburu.
That man did nothing I repeat nothing for Awgu people.
He came to games villages promised to renovate till he left office.
He promised to decentralize Esut and send some faculties to Awgu which should be in ihe but never built even a single block there.
He built army command day secondary in nsukka, university of health sciences in nsukka, moved some ministries to nsukka, built opi-nsukka road.
But never did anything for Awgu and Aninri.
But, will quickly rush to Ogilishi igbo house in Awgu during Ofala to eat Semo and draw soup as a governor.

If Peter Mbah actually delivers this railway project spanning the entire East, then forget titles—he’s not just a governor; he’s a revolutionary, a one-man empire in motion. And if the five Eastern governors had even a fraction of this kind of ruthless vision and execution, the East wouldn’t just be ahead—it would leave the rest of Africa choking in its dust.
We actually need all the South East CEOs , Governors and Enterpreneurs thinking like this.

Do state governments build inter-state projects?

Immediately I saw the lie of a topic I knew it was paid propaganda.

typical obidient. Incredibly senseless rabble ros. Do state governors build interstate railways?

What he is hinting at is probably the broader plan of SEDC to liaise with the state governments of the south east to build such railway.

Peter MBAH want an Enugu State owned railway with the permission from the Nigeria Railway Corporation.

It's a business rail track. He doesn't mind paying each state the rail es their land royalty. But the revenue from the rail track is 100% sure.

what do you mean by Enugu state owned railway? You either have interstate owned by the fg or intrastate railways owned by the state as with Anambra being planned by soludo. If you want to connect an intrastate railway to other states, there has to be an arrangement among the connecting states which MBA has not told us. He is instead talking about building a railway to onne through several states, while isolating information about possible collaboration of neighbouring states and even the SEDC, when his state doesn't border Onne port.

Commendable. Is not a single state project , if only the south East states can come together we need a gas line projects so that all factories in the south East will run on gas, I know there is a gas line in Aba used by geometric power , if Nigerian breweries. Or cocola cola tells you how many billions they spend on diesel a year you will know is not easy doing business in the south East.

It is a lofty idea and will only flourish if it's a separate rail line connecting all South Eastern cities to Onne than rehabilitating or refurbishing the moribund cum debilitating Federal Railway line through Onne undecided

This is a project that all South Eastern governors should come together and embark on to make the region more prosperous. Enugu can't do it alone! sad

There is a certain Mr. Vitalis that says infrastructures like these are not useful, rather they should share the money for people to open shop. I wonder what his take on this new development will be.

Nice one mbah.

But just change the topic to Ekiti or Oyo to build..... Then you will see several Lamentations like government of future tense, audio project, APC propaganda etc.

Why not live and let's live instead of using bad energy to react to some developmental news from other regions. We are all Nigerian, and Nigeria shall be great in our lifetime.

The airport projects are stoopid.

The funds Anambra, Ebonyi and now Abia are putting into building airports should have been put into this sort of rail project. The SE govts should coordinate this together.

If you leave Enugu at 4am in the morning, it's possible to touch all the 5 states in a day with a solid car. So, why build airports?.

Rail linking all SE states is a much more useful project.
