I just noticed that the UK visa center in Enugu has been closed.

Please our able governor and other SE governors shouldn't have allowed this to happen.

This is so sad and disappointing.

Peeps are raising all kinds crap issues relating to this.
The simple truth is that the UK consulate changed the contractor for its visa services from TLS to VFS Global. TLS is the one that maintains a service office in Enugu. Now that VFD Global is in charge, they closed the visa offices in both Enugu and Port Harcourt, but are rather running two offices in Lagos. In Ikeja and VI.

Phone calls to the UK consulate by Eastern Governors who they like to deceive with their fake publicised visits can quickly force VFS to man the Enugu Office.

Do not forget that about a decade ago, they closed the British Council Office, and left only DIFID and moved to Port Harcourt. Then after about half a decade. They closed DIFID as well. We all know the modern Britain is a poor country, but it speaks more of disregard and irrelevance of the Eastern Region from the British perspective.

Makes you think doesn’t it! Had the naira not plummeted to the all time lows we have seen from 2023 to date, what we would been talking of now is the Enugu state gov’t under Peter Mbah raising more than $1 billion in revenue annually for governance and provision of infrastructure in the state! If he manages to pull this off, and have it reflected in project delivery in the state, then he would rank just after Dr MI Okpara and next to Dee Sam Mbakwe in the annals of performing s of Igbo extraction!

I’ve always said there’s no reason why states like Anambra and Abia should not be recording at least double of what Enugu is capable of recording (at least N800 billion) in revenue generation! They have double the commercial and industrial activity Enugu has, and Anambra specifically has more than double the taxable real-estate and housing infrastructure that Enugu has! Part of the problem is that Anambra indigenes don’t like being taxed for their landed properties and the gov’t doesn’t seem to be that interested in pursuing them for it! Coupled with the fact that the four other states in the south-east are yet to effectively plug all the loopholes through which they haemorrhage on their IGR as we see Peter Mbah has done in Enugu!
Taxing your people to death us not economic growth. Rather growth in IGR should be driven by opening of new production opportunities. You do not achieve more by overloading a loaded donkey.

'Taxing your people to death'.....'overloading a loaded donkey'? Dude, it's common knowledge that Nigerians generally and Igbo specifically don't like paying tax and are notoriously stubborn and evasive in this regard! What s for the increase in IGR that you're wrongly identifying as 'overtaxing' is simply the Enugu state gov't living up to its responsibilities by ruthlessly plugging loopholes through which tax receipts leaked in the past, as well as widening the tax net to include those who weren't paying tax in the past or were artfully dodging it! And i say a big kudos to the Enugu state gov't! Everyone should be made to pay their fair share of tax! You can't expect nice infrastructure and policies from gov't then go AWOL when gov't comes around looking for you to pay your tax! Doing so says you're being sneaky and taking your tax paying neighbour for a mugu while seeing yourself as the 'smart one'! Give on to Ceaser what is Ceasers'!

Your defence is stringy. I visited Roban Stores last Dec and saw adverts for sales tax by Enugu State Govt. Question is, sales tax was replaced by VAT more than three decades ago. So why are you double taxing your people? For bakeries, VAT is collected at source on Wheat and sundry, and Enugu State gets her own share. Why the do you want to double tax your people?

Increase your tax net by opening new opportunities in Coal mining, clay and pottery, tourism in those azul looking rolling hills in Nsukka, fruit plantation, just to name a few opportunities.

Personally, I do not believe any Govt. should be richer than 30% of the wealth of her citizens. Anything significantly above that gradually creates a derailed governance system, with people seeking for power to pursue alien dominance agendas that have no relation to the populace, after placating the populace with a wealfare state. which is the big problem you have in Europe and USA today. It leads straight to economic decline. The state should grow limited to a percentage of its populations wealth.

If you do not understand me, look at Rivers state. The 13% derivation made her so rich relative to the population. The last major infrastructural project in Rivers state was Amaechi's monorail, which remains unfinished. Amaechi truncated that to bankroll the Election of Buhari with Rivers money. Wike did same trying to bank roll himself to presidency. Tinibu is targeting same money, either trying to help himself, or prevent another person from being launched from River state money. All in all, Rivers state people are benefitting nothing.

Do not gather the society's funds into one purse, else the vultures will come to visit.

Was it not the same airport that was rehabilitated not quite long? Don't they have scheduled maintenance to avoid this level of service disruption?

People should be happy or willing to pay their taxes in the East. To make this possible, they should know what their taxes are used for and possibly benefit from them. The problem is the manner people are taxed. I believe it should be done with their consents, and there should be option to opt-out of a taxing scheme if they are not satisfied, but that would mean not getting adequate services or infrastructures.

There should be incentives for paying taxes.
Should be possible to let tax payers track their taxes or recieve alerts when the taxes are used for what they are meant for. This will help convince them that their taxes are well utilized and won't be misused or stolen. Imagine how fulfilling it will be to know that your tax was used to build a particular road or pay for a particular service. You'll be happy to pay another time.
Penalty for not paying taxes could simply be a limited use of infrastructures and services funded by taxes, personally getting involved in some community services like clearing gutters, cutting grasses etc

That will be awesome. If Mbah can accomplish this , then he will be in the level of Sam Mbakwe, Michael Okpara. I wish him the best.
This is the type of ambitious developmental governance that we lacked in the last istration.

The Proposed 80-Year Concession of Enugu International Airport: A Call for Urgent Action!

The recent announcement by the Tinubu istration to concession the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for 80 years is deeply troubling and should raise serious concerns among the people of Enugu and the entire Igbo community.

To begin with, Akanu Ibiam International airport, Enugu, is one of only five international airports in Nigeria. Yet, unlike the others, it has been limited to just one international airline, while the remaining four enjoy access to at least three or more. This restriction is both unjust and discriminatory.

Furthermore, the international terminal buildings at the other four airports have long been completed and are fully operational. Enugu’s terminal building, on the other hand, remains unfinished and non-functional, despite starting at the same time with those at the other four airports.

It is worth recalling that two years ago, the federal government announced plans to concession all international airports in Nigeria. However, during the actual execution of this policy, Enugu was suspiciously excluded, while the other four proceeded without delay.

In another instance of clear neglect, the Enugu airport was shut down for over three years to resurface a 3-kilometer runway—a task that typically takes no more than three months in other airports.

Now, the Tinubu government has introduced yet another questionable move: proposing to concession the Enugu airport to an undisclosed international aviation company for an unprecedented 80 years!!! This stands in sharp contrast to the other airports, which were concessioned to reputable international firms for a much more reasonable period of 20 years.

These repeated actions suggest a deliberate strategy to undermine development in the Southeast, using the only international airport in the region as a tool to achieve that aim.

It is important to emphasize that such actions have continued to succeed largely due to the silence and inaction of the people of the region. It is time for political leaders, civil society, and especially the youth from the Southeast to speak out boldly against this latest move.

We must reject this blatant marginalization and insist that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport be treated with the same respect, investment, and fairness as other international airports across the country. The Southeast deserves equitable infrastructure and opportunities, and the airport is a vital part of that future.

Let it be clear: we cannot build a united Nigeria while deliberately stifling one of its regions. We call on the Federal Government to reverse this unjust proposal and ensure that the Southeast is given its rightful place in the nation’s development.

Yet some pompous, big headed fool prances about in arrogance, bragging to anyone bothered to listen that he’s ’number 6 on the protocol list and by implication the highest Igbo in the APC/Tinubu gov’t’!

Besides the evil hegemonic alliance, our second biggest problem as a people are the house-nigger, appeasing and criminal Igbo political elite empowered by the Yoruba/Fulani hegemony to do their bidding and give the illusion that Ndigbo are not excluded from politics, governance and power-play at the centre! Ever since Buhari and Tinubu snatched power in 2015, what has played out regarding the distribution of top positions in the APC led government, and particularly what has played out in the rail and aviation sectors of the economy, shows the fallacy in the assertion that ’Ndigbo should align with or be part of the Buhari/Tinubu led centre in order to reap the rich rewards of democracy’! To be fair, we also heard this same annoying talk when PDP were in power….just not to this extent, and it wasn’t as annoying! I don’t know how any moronic Igbo can see the situation of the runway at AIIA Enugu, and how Buhari and Hadi-Sirika sold us a dummy just to sabotage its operations, yet imply Ndigbo/south-east are doing well and being treated fairly by the hegemonic alliance of Buhari and Tinubu!

Well, this kind of news, whether true or not, is part of the reasons we want South East to be somewhat independent of federal government. Build and control the necessary infrastructures yourselves in order to feel more independent than others. No amount of money is too big to get when it comes to building viable infrastructures. So, you don't really need the federal government. They will need you more than you need them especially for the purpose of winning elections...just focus on doing the right things. It's a very insecure and desperate federal government by the way. It can go to any direction to get for its party that does not come from the heart. I think only the weaker ones will fall for it, and once you fall you lose focus and start playing politics even with state developments instead of serving your people and doing what's right which is way more effective than politicking

What's happening in the South East (Enugu, Anambra and Abia) should serve as proof that you don't need to be in "ruling party" to develop.
By the way, it's not really a progressive party. It's more retrogressive than progressive hence why things are the way they are. Look at what is happening in ebonyi. It seems proper progress was taken away ever since it fell in the hands of the so called progressive party. Nothing I've read so far about imo is interesting

Development is not just about building infrastructures. It has to be purposeful. If you are building a car for example, you dont just build whatever you want. You need to build different parts that fit and work perfectly together to make the car drive flawlessly. This is a secret that few governors especially from the south eastern states have that others don't. Others lack the secret because of what or who they choose to associate with. If what you associate with hates igbo progress, you'll not develop like others.

Please be thankful for what you currently have in the South East states. It's rare and may never happen again.
If the Airport needs better management in order to be profitable, let enugu state (or Enugu/igbo patriot) take over, afterall states build federal roads. Taking responsibility can prevent undue interference from the federal government.
Interestingly, the Airport was an achievement of Stella Odua and a government they accused of doing little to nothing. That should atleast make a normal person feel shame and guilt. If she hadn't developed the Enugu Airport, it would probably have been neglected
