The Christian Association of Nigeria and popular Nigerian cleric, Pastor Abel Damina, have criticised the founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, over his sermon that Jesus Christ hates poverty and never associated with the poor during His time on earth.

Ibiyeomie, in a viral video on social media, was seen telling his congregation that Jesus never visited any poor person’s home, which he interpreted as a sign of divine disapproval of poverty.

He further stated that Christ’s death and resurrection were not only to bring salvation but also to free believers from poverty.

He argued that remaining in poverty after coming to Christ reflected a lack of spiritual understanding.

“Jesus never visited any poor person in his house, that means He hates poverty. Check your Bible, He visited Lazarus, they were not poor, they were giving him food. He visited a sinner called Zacchaeus who was rich, tell me one poor man that Jesus entered his house, He hates poverty, that is the meaning.

“He (Jesus) hates people who are poor. He died for you not to be poor, so how can you now come into church having that kind of mentality. You can become poor, but you are not permitted to remain poor. Nothing is wrong with you coming to Christ as a poor man, but it is wrong for you to remain poor,” Ibiyeomie told the congregation.

Reacting to the sermon, the founder of Power City International Ministry, Damina, in a vieo seen by Saturday PUNCH, mocked Ibiyeomie’s interpretation, calling it a distortion of biblical truth.

Damina, who is also known for making controversial statements, described Ibiyeomie as a “prosperity monger and money lover.”

He called on Ibiyeomie to stop “insulting the sensibilities of the scripture” and misleading his congregation.

Damina also accused Ibiyeomie of deliberately twisting the message of Christ to suit materialistic agendas.

“How can Jesus hate poor people? We know the grace of our Lord Jesus, He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor. He identified with poor people. He became poor that you, through his poverty, may be rich and the rich is not material richness. It is riches of grace, mercy, and his righteousness.”

“Jesus identified with the poor even in his birth. He was born in a manger, in a family of poor parents – Joseph, the carpenter and Mary. If He hates poor people, he should have come through the house of Bill Gates or through the house of Elon Musk, but He came through an old poor carpenter family,” Damina said.

Also reacting, the Lagos State chairman of CAN, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, dismissed Ibiyeomie’s claim, describing it as an insult to biblical truth.

He labelled the pastor’s sermon as dangerous distortion of Christ’s mission, stating that it is “loose talk” and “a misrepresentation of sound biblical teaching that has no place in true Christian doctrine.

Adegbite who spoke with Saturday PUNCH in a telephone interview, warned Christians not to be misled by the teachings of what he called “fake pastors” who prioritise wealth over truth.

“He (Ibiyeomie) should not be misleading people and he should tell people the truth and nothing but the truth. For us, Jesus is a lover of the poor and he identified with them and that is one of the reasons why He came into the world.

“By their fruits we shall know them. They (pastors) can make anything, they can make billions, that is not Christianity, that is not the faith that we know. The message Jesus wants us to preach is about salvation because that is whole essence of Christ coming,” Adegbite said.

Did God really call this so-called man of God?

I mean, were they genuinely called by God to be a man of God, or did they just take that title on themselves?

Hahahaha, see them renegading against Ibiyeomie because he's exposing the flaws in Christian religion

Some pastors would prefer their to be continuing to be poor as long as they are getting rich

Why should jobless people be attending church Night vigils 3 times in a week? Why?

But you won't hear anything from these yahoo pastors, they are all in it for the money

The other one is planning a meeting on the moon while Nigerians can't afford three square meals under the government he fully backed

These people are a shame to Christianity

Stop giving these lazy pulpit thieves your hard earned money. Una no go hear. Whoever or whatever made the universe does not and will NEVER EVER EVER NEVER need your money for A N Y T H I N G whatsoever. Instead of giving your hard earned money to these thieves, use it to feed stray dogs on the street.

Any human being who collects money/tithe/offering/first fruit or anything from other humans on behalf of the maker of the universe is a THIEF . You don't need a judge to tell you that.

Any human who gives money to another human with the mindset that he/she is giving money to the creator of the universe or any unseen entity is not only a big fool but a mad person.

Any man who tells you he works for the maker of the universe is a thief. He works for his stomach. He must one day come to tell you his "all-sufficient " god whom he works for needs your money. The being behind the existence of the universe is not a human like Dangote, Elon Musk or Tinubu that will need workers and money. Wise up

Jesus came into the world poor, so we can learn 'Poverty is not your friend'.

Besides, His being born in a manger is because they were on the run from Herod

As much as I don't even agree with Pastor Ibiyeomie on some of his teachings, but it would have been better if these Pastors bring out scriptures to counter the Pastor and show where Jesus visited a poor man or woman so that some of us that are ignorant can learn... Let me leave it for senior Pastors of Nairaland, please show us scriptures where Jesus visited a poor man or woman so that ignorant people like me can learn...

When you become A Leader/Very Rich ensure the following;

1. Have a circle of sincere friends who can look you in the eye and tell you if you F-up;
2. Ensure you continously study, listen and learn;
3. Periodically evaluate your actions and speech yourself;
4. Ensure that you are not thinking less of even the Driver/Gateman or 'Man' on the street; and
5. that all that you are/have is merely by Grace.

Congratulations to. Mr. David, he has given Mr. Damina opportunity to take him to the cleaner.

Is he not a protege of Oyedepo? The biggest Prosperity monger in Nigeria? By their fruits you shall know them, whenever you hear a protege of Oyedepo, you know them automatically. they are all birds of a feather. If you ask them how to break this poverty now, they will start to tell you about 'the mystery of the first fruits' and all such rubbish. What part of Jesus's gospel did they find all this their money harlotry teachings from? These are the ones of whom the bible said their god is their belly and they manufacture teachings to tickle the ears of their sheeple and make them part with huge sums calling them seeds. You can sow all the money in your as seed, but if you don't fear God and keep His commandments, HE is not committed to your cause and most importantly, you are on a highway to HELL! When last did these thieves preach consecration? Or holiness? Or fear of God? Always Prosperity, fruitfulness, abundance! Words that never for once came out of the mouth of Jesus, go and check. So whose doctrine are they teaching if not the doctrine of satan, who told jesus 'bow down and worship me and I will give you all the riches of this world..' it is obvious these ones have bowed down for satan already. That is why the only word out of their mouth is money, money, money all the time.

God and Jesus love the poor! A simple study of the book of James shows just how much. In fact, just google it and many scriptures will pop out. A lot of the messages of hope and comfort in the bible are to the poor and afflicted, who were the people Jesus surrounded himself with when he was on earth. Leave these yahoo pastors and their mammon doctrines to continue to deceive themselves. Time will tell.

It is not everything that scriptural texts are available for. Some things don't just make sense.
Let me ask you. Is there any scriptural texts where Jesus visited AN AFRICAN/BLACK MAN? Does that mean Jesus hated Africans/Blacks because there is not biblical text? Some things are just common sense.
If Jesus did not associate with the poor. Tell me how many of his disciples were rich. Didn't Jesus live with them and dine with them or visited them in their homes?

Thanks.
