Lately, news of CBEX crashing and the heartbreak it left behind has shaken many Nigerians: our brothers and sisters who invested their hard-earned money with the hope of financial upliftment, only to watch it vanish. May Allah ease your pain and replace your loss with something better. Ameen.

But this is also a wake-up call. Islam teaches us to be cautious, responsible, and honest in our dealings. Sadly, many of these schemes, including CBEX and similar “investment platforms,” fall under what is clearly impermissible in Islam.

Why Ponzi Schemes Are Haram in Islam
A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment system where early investors are paid profits from new investors’ money, not from real business activity. It thrives on deception, gambling, and unsustainable promises.

Islamic principles strongly condemn such dealings because they violate the core values of fairness, transparency, and mutual benefit. Allah warns us clearly in the Qur’an:

“O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, sacrificing to stone alters, and divining arrows are abominations of Satan’s handiwork. So avoid them that you may be successful.”
(Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:90)

In fact, when someone invests in these schemes with the hope that others will and their money will multiply, it becomes a form of gharar (excessive uncertainty) and maysir (gambling)—both of which are clearly prohibited.

If a person puts in ₦10,000 in hopes of getting ₦30,000, without knowing how the money is truly being used, it becomes a gamble, not a business. They may profit or they may lose everything. This risk isn't calculated, productive investment it's just rolling the dice with one’s sustenance.

WHAT MUSLIM SHOULD DO INSTEAD?

Let this be a reminder for us all:

Avoid the "quick money syndrome"—it often leads to regret.

Invest only in halal, ethical business opportunities where your risk, effort, and returns are clear and justifiable.

Trust in slow, consistent effort, and that true barakah comes from Allah, not from hype.

To those who have lost their money in CBEX or similar platforms, know this:
Allah sees your pain and your loss is a test, not a punishment. Reflect, repent if needed, and move forward. May Allah replace your loss with something more lasting and pure.

Let us all learn and encourage one another to seek halal means of sustenance.

May Allah protect us from the traps of Shaytaan, and grant us contentment, barakah, and halal wealth. Ameen.

With how the scheme was orchestrated, no one could have thought it was a Ponzi. Everyone thought it was actually AI generating signals for people to trade. Many religious leaders from the two popular religion also help propagate that Cbex. Many people the platform when the found out their leader( imam and pastor ) have also invested in it.

I dey America. Na so my cousin in Nigeria ed me to introduce me to so called investment. I knew immediately it’s a ponzi scheme and that was four weeks ago. As if I knew it would crash four weeks later.

I insisted to my cousin that I’m not interested. My cousin went further to tell me that even people in America invested and they’re in their WhatsApp group. I told myself if you’re in America and you’re so stupid to invest in ponzi in Nigeria when such schemes are outright banned in America , then I thought to myself that they deserve to lose their money if they did.

Your level of understanding is very low.

The write up was to discourage and dissuade Muslims from partaking or getting involved in ponzi schemes under any guise

That you know a Muslim doing it does not mean Islam allows it

but your Islam permit old man marry to marry 8yrs old girl? Like your warrior prophet did when he marry Aisha at 8yrs old. If islam permit it, is it even right? As a Christian, I don't agree with everything in the Bible, because it is written in the Bible don't mean I should do it. Gideon a prophet of God marry many wives in the old testament and God use him to achieve his purpose don't mean I should follow such a steps. You Muslim should start preaching against nonsense in the Quran and use your sense
