Edo State Government has initiated moves to reclaim oil wells at the Orogho community in Orhionmwo Local Government Area of the state, which were allegedly ceded to Delta State.

The state Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, led a delegation to the community on Friday to seek an amicable resolution to the controversy surrounding the ceding of the oil wells being operated by Seplat Energy Plc.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary (S) to the deputy governor, Mr Friday Aghedo, Idahosa met with Odionwere of the community, Pa Odiase Omorogieva, youth leaders, and community as part of moves to peacefully resolve the issue.

He commended them for their peaceful disposition since the ceding of their “natural wealth” to another state.

He added, “My visit is to douse tension and allay the fear of losing their God-given mineral resources to another state, while the community where oil exploration and production takes place is under development.”

Idahosa promised that the present istration would explore all avenues and liaise with relevant agencies of government to ensure that the benefits from the assets in Edo State were restored to boost socio-economic development.

Idahosa, who inspected the disputed oil wells in the company of the General Manager, Government Relations, Seplat Energy, Mrs. Adiza Gambati, appealed to the people not to take the law into their hands as the matter would be given the needed attention.

The community youth leader, Charles Eghaghe, expressed satisfaction over the prompt response by the state government to find an amicable resolution to the injustice meted out to the Orogho community.

He noted that since 1993, when Shell Petroleum Development Company began operation in the disputed oil wells, royalties were paid to the Edo State Government in addition to corporate social responsibility.

He, however, noted that things changed when Seplat Energy Plc took over the operations of the oil wells.

Eghaghe appealed to the government to urgently return the disputed oil wells to the state, as most youths of Orogho who were graduates had no jobs.

I urge the co-owners of SEPLAT, Austin Avuru and Ojiakor to stop playing nepotism with the oil wells under the company. Shell had been paying royalties to the Government of Edo State since 1993 but as soon as SEPLAT took over the oil wells, you began paying the royalties to Delta State Government allegedly because of your affinity to Delta State. This has to stop. Governor Okpebholo must ensure all the oil wells are back to Edo State and all outstanding royalties must be fully paid. Wike collected Rivers oil wells from Imo state, Akwa-ibom collected theirs from Cross River. I hate injustice.

You're correct, I confirmed it and it's true. Wetin oil money go cause for naija. The difference is that those ones you talked about have not began production, so no royalties is being paid for now and I believe they will settle the ownership tussle before production commences but for Edo-Delta, oil production had began a long time, royalties was paid to Edo before it was diverted to Delta.
Oil money is no respecter of familial. The most shocking was Akwa-ibom and Cross River. It's Akwa-ibom that turned Cross River into a broke state. They only have Tinapa and Seaport, even those two are moribund. Cross River wey dey ball before, Akwa-ibom collected all their oil wells.

dry and accursed land you mean? You really know nothing about the abundant mineral deposits in Edo state, aside oil ie petroleum, Edo state has the largest mineral deposits in the whole of South South. There are three major cement facories in Edo state alone. Edo has the largest marble deposit in Nigeria with large mining taking place for several years. Most tiles made in Nigeria source their natural resources from Edo state. Edo is also among the top producers of gold in Nigeria. It also has one of the largest gas deposits in Nigeria. So stfu

Dunce. U will always be a dullard.

Edo State in Nigeria is rich in various mineral resources, including bitumen, clay, dolomite, phosphate, glass-sand, gold, gypsium, iron-ore, lignite, limestone, marble, and oil/gas. Some of the more prominent deposits include limestone, dolomite, gold, kaolin, feldspar, and clay

Say what you know.

Royalties were being paid to Edo state but someone is not telling the Truth. I M close to Austin Avuru and he never hid anything from me.

Though,I never hear the side of Prof Orjiakor who lives in Enugu. He is The Chairman Seplat Group floated in 2009.

You are right in the ownership structure of the company. I give it to you!

Thanks for your apt response, people think Edo State is a poor State. If oil revenue drops or is stopped today, how many states in Nigeria can survive, Edo will be amongst the state that can survive with the other mineral resources at its disposal.

Lol revisionists history at its finest 🤣. Cross River had the opportunity to settle out of court but they chose not to. All or nothing gambles are always dangerous.

Yes, we are benefitting from it.

Niger Republic, the world's poorest country, would've been better than Nigeria if hadn't had crude oil and gas.
