He's a US Citizen with a US port and he's BITCHING about NOT getting a Nigerian port.

Absolute MADNESS!

For context, the US port can travel to 186 countries in the world WITHOUT Visa. The Nigerian port can only travel to 44, mostly African, countries WITHOUT Visa.

Owning a US port and still bitching about not getting a Nigerian port is like standing in a SPRING of sparkling water and still begging for PUREWATER.

His reasoning is warped. The wife does not automatically becomes a citizen of the US once she married an American, only greencard initially. So because he married a Nigerian and living in the US should automatically grant him a Nigerian citizenship?

I don't know how some of you people understand some things. In america, once you are married to an american whether male of female then you can qualify for citizen at a stage. This man and his naija wife obviously have been married for sometime, 3 kids after and he goes to apply for a nigerian port only to find out that he can't be issued a port because our constitution does not permit him to become a nigerian citizen through married. Only women can become naija citizens through married

Nigeria is a misogynistic entity. The discrimination between man and woman is terrible 🧐

I you.
You were the one whose mother was crying a few years ago that your boyfriend didn't buy bread while coming to visit you grin
You actually had to deactivate your previous moniker after that.

Today, you're saying a policy that applies male and females is misogynistic. I think this foolishness runs deep in your family.
pimplucious: 11:07am On Apr 08
NuclearWinter:
There's no double standard.

A woman is expected after completing her marriage rites to go and be in her husband's house.

That is why the Nigerian govt confers automatic citizenship to a foreign woman married to a Nigerian man.

And why is the oyibo man complaining about having to reside in Nigeria for at least 15 years before being eligible for citizenship? If he wants so desperately to be Nigerian , he should come and live here.

Thanks. I’ve been looking for an answer to make it make sense and this just did that. Most commenters are just dumb they think laws are just put in place without adequate thought. Thanks again.

It's a good thing that people are speaking up. More and more women need to speak up and push for that law to be amended. It's clearly unfair and unjust.

However, nobody should a bill that will reserve a certain number of positions for the females in the national assembly. Everyone should go and contest.

I believe it's a law curated from our culture.
In Nigeria, a woman is married into the husband's family. So the woman automatically becomes part of the husband's family.

A United States citizen married to a Nigerian woman has taken to social media to express deep frustration over the challenges he’s facing in trying to acquire Nigerian citizenship and a port, despite being legally married and having Nigerian children.

In a video making rounds online, the man, who is currently in the U.S., questioned what he described as a “double standard” in Nigeria’s immigration and citizenship process. According to him, his research online shows that when a Nigerian man marries a foreign woman, she becomes eligible to apply for a Nigerian port almost immediately. However, the reverse doesn’t apply when a Nigerian woman marries a foreign man.

"Why is it that if a Nigerian man marries a foreigner, the wife gets her port, but if a Nigerian woman marries a foreigner, he has to live in Nigeria for 15 years before even being considered eligible?" he asked.

The footage also shows him holding up the Nigerian ports of his wife and their children, further emphasizing his point that he is already family and committed to Nigeria by blood and marriage.

He lamented that the process appears discriminatory and questioned whether the information he found online is truly accurate or if there are exceptions. “Why me?” he repeatedly asked, hoping that what he read isn't entirely true and that there could still be a path forward for him.

To even apply 4 Nigerian Visa from United States be like Presidential appointment.
That's the reason many foreigners dey enter Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania not just insecurity alone.
I like the fact that the NIS set a high bar as regards matters of issuing Nigerian ports to foreigners. Make we get high rating at least for something.

Yo are the one that doesnt understand. A greencard holder which the wife would be after marrying a US citizen cannot travel outside the United States for more than one year. You have to explain why you as a greencard holder stayed outside the shores of he US for so long. In the US, it takes about 3 years of having a greencard and in some circumstances, 5year to start applying for citizenship. The guy stays in the US but wants Nigerian citizenship

If this is true, it definitely looks misogynic to me. Absolute double standards.

The funny thing is that trying to follow legal routes to get this document is cumbersome for most foreigners, but if they follow other routes, they can even enter Nigeria and live permanently for long with no documents or even get this port if they sort the higher powers in immigration office Abuja.

You nailed it. All this one na wash. Go to port office, find guys a little something, give them your port photos, they'll tell you when to come collect your port

The question should be if the man married a Nigerian woman in Nigeria or they are based in US? Every country has their laws. Every country must not emulate the United States immigration law.

Oga, Nigeria is a patrilineal country. So, a man married to a foreigner is considered as one of us, he brings his family home, so his wife is given automatic citizenship. A woman married to a foreigner leaves Nigeria to her husband's country, this time the US. You are lucky they gave your children ports.

Oga say na Nigeria dey affect ur brain?

What the guy is talking about is reciprocity

In the west if u get married to a citizen after some years you will become a citizen of your spouse.

But in Nigeria you can’t become a citizen is what he is saying.

If Trump says he wants to recriprocate now people will say he is mad.

Nearly everyone is missing the point.
The issue is that A non Nigerian woman can become a Nigerian citizen by naturalisation via marriage.

A Non Nigerian man CANNOT become a Nigerian citizen by naturalisation through marriage.

There is absolutely no reason why this should be so and it's just another disgusting example of misogyny in Nigeria.

It has to change
There is a bill to change that which has ed secondary reading on the house of assembly.

Nigeria is not a misogynistic entity. The discrimination between men and women is indeed a serious issue, but it is incorrect to label the entire nation as such. Regarding the matter of citizenship, it is unreasonable to expect someone to obtain a Nigerian port if they do not reside in Nigeria. Marrying a Nigerian woman does not automatically confer Nigerian citizenship upon the husband; rather, it is the wife who may acquire citizenship of another country.

The wife should obtain an American port, not the husband a Nigerian port. To call Nigeria a misogynistic entity is erroneous. Individuals often use such when they cannot achieve their desired outcomes, as seen in developed countries where men are sometimes oppressed. It is surprising that you did not address the situation in developed countries where men are treated poorly and have become second-class citizens.

This your statement shows how mayopic you are. Why should it be easy for an American to get Nigerian citizenship when it is extremely difficult just getting their visa.
It is not difficult getting their Visa you dumb ass. If you marry an American whether male or female you automatically become an American citizen. This only elaborates the point I was trying to educate those dumb Nigerian men on the other trend about how Nigeria discriminates based on gender.

If you are married to an American, getting a Green Card is easy, if all things are ok. You then follow the conditions from Green Card to Citizenship
