I'M Married To A Nigerian—Why Can’t I Get A port? – US Man Cries Out (Pics) (23559 Views)

A United States citizen married to a Nigerian woman has taken to social media to express deep frustration over the challenges he’s facing in trying to acquire Nigerian citizenship and a port, despite being legally married and having Nigerian children. In a video making rounds online, the man, who is currently in the U.S., questioned what he described as a “double standard” in Nigeria’s immigration and citizenship process. According to him, his research online shows that when a Nigerian man marries a foreign woman, she becomes eligible to apply for a Nigerian port almost immediately. However, the reverse doesn’t apply when a Nigerian woman marries a foreign man. "Why is it that if a Nigerian man marries a foreigner, the wife gets her port, but if a Nigerian woman marries a foreigner, he has to live in Nigeria for 15 years before even being considered eligible?" he asked. The footage also shows him holding up the Nigerian ports of his wife and their children, further emphasizing his point that he is already family and committed to Nigeria by blood and marriage. He lamented that the process appears discriminatory and questioned whether the information he found online is truly accurate or if there are exceptions. “Why me?” he repeatedly asked, hoping that what he read isn't entirely true and that there could still be a path forward for him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaHLcJtHaVc 7 Likes 2 Shares |

SA should apply this rule as well...😏😏😏... So that any man who marries an SA lady would have to live in SA for 20 years before being eligible for an SA port.

Its not about getting citizenship in Nigeria coz of marriage He should be checked and rechecked to see if he is worth been in Nigeria. If he has good intentions for coming to the country. If he isn't a terrorist to the country. All countries do this check b4 granting access despite been tied by marriage. Its normal. HE should chill 8 Likes 3 Shares |

If this is true, it definitely looks misogynic to me. Absolute double standards. The funny thing is that trying to follow legal routes to get this document is cumbersome for most foreigners, but if they follow other routes, they can even enter Nigeria and live permanently for long with no documents or even get this port if they sort the higher powers in immigration office Abuja. 5 Likes |

APOPTOSIS: I have always heard this. And it is even said that Nigeria has one of the most expensive visas fee for tourism among most African countries (with no absolute guarantee of getting it) 16 Likes |

This is the DUMBEST man that ever dumbed! He's a US Citizen with a US port and he's BITCHING about NOT getting a Nigerian port. Absolute MADNESS! For context, the US port can travel to 186 countries in the world WITHOUT Visa. The Nigerian port can only travel to 44, mostly African, countries WITHOUT Visa. Owning a US port and still bitching about not getting a Nigerian port is like standing in a SPRING of sparkling water and still begging for PUREWATER. It's MADNESS! 28 Likes 2 Shares |

He is quite right. It's sexist. Being married to a female citizen should also confer citizenship as soon as all the other conditions are met. We are just so stupid in this country 6 Likes |

elantraceey: This your statement shows how mayopic you are. Why should it be easy for an American to get Nigerian citizenship when it is extremely difficult just getting their visa. 10 Likes 1 Share |

Nearly everyone is missing the point. The issue is that A non Nigerian woman can become a Nigerian citizen by naturalisation via marriage. A Non Nigerian man CANNOT become a Nigerian citizen by naturalisation through marriage. There is absolutely no reason why this should be so and it's just another disgusting example of misogyny in Nigeria. It has to change 22 Likes 2 Shares |

DAramis:Exactly Traveling to Nigeria as a foreigner is almost always frustrating including the trip itself. People wanna visit Nigeria especially when they get to see how blacks relocate and do so well they wonder the place these brilliance would have migrated from. Insecurity, warnings from the U.S. Embassies and Visa frustrations remain a fishbone in the throat 4 Likes |
