A socio-political group, Think Yoruba First (TYF), has rejected a proposed bill before the House of Representatives that seeks to grant indigene rights to Nigerians who have either resided in a particular place for 10 years or have been married to an indigenous person for the same period.

In a statement signed by its executives—Dr Bukola Adeniji, Mr Kayode Ọlọkọ, Dr Mark Faleye, Engr Kunle Faleti, and Mr Bolarinwa Oladimeji—TYF argued that the bill, sponsored by Hon. Kalu Okezie, would erode the cultural and historical foundations of indigenous peoples across Nigeria and could fuel ethnic tensions, conflicts, and long-term instability.

The group maintained that global best practices do not grant indigenous status based on residency or marriage, citing examples such as Native Americans in the United States, Aboriginals in Australia, and indigenous communities in Canada and New Zealand.

“No serious nation undermines the rights of its indigenous people by arbitrarily granting indigenous status to settlers. Around the world, indigenous identity is tied to ancestry, cultural heritage, and historical connection to the land—not just residency or marriage.

“History has shown that forceful alteration of indigenous identity is a precursor to ethnic violence and civil unrest, especially in multi-ethnic and multi-cultural nations.

“Consider these cases: Rwanda (1994 Genocide)—The manipulation of ethnic identity led to mass violence between the Hutu and Tutsi populations, with devastating consequences. South Sudan Conflict—decades of imposed ethnic integrations contributed to tensions that eventually led to South Sudan’s secession. Yugoslavia (Balkan Wars of the 1990s)—The forced blending of ethnic identities contributed to one of Europe’s most brutal conflicts in the 20th century.

“Nigeria itself has witnessed countless ethnic conflicts due to territorial and indigenous disputes. The crises in Jos, Southern Kaduna, Ife-Modakeke, and Aguleri-Umuleri, as well as the clashes between herders and farmers across the Middle Belt, all stem from disputes over land and identity.

Legalising the erasure of indigenous identity will exacerbate these conflicts, not resolve them,” the statement read.

TYF called on representatives from the South-West, South-South, North-Central, North-East, and North-West regions to oppose the bill in its entirety, emphasising that the protection of indigenous rights is a fundamental responsibility that must not be compromised.

The group urged the National Assembly to focus on ethnolinguistic restructuring, as advocated by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, stating that such an approach would promote peaceful coexistence, economic empowerment, and equitable development for all Nigerians without undermining the historical and cultural integrity of indigenous peoples.

“The indigenous identity of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities is a sacred heritage that must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. If this bill is allowed to , it will set a dangerous precedent that could lead to an irreversible distortion of Nigeria’s ethnic foundations, leading to deeper fragmentation and possible disintegration,” TYF warned.

Now that I am aware that we have baby gorillas in Nigeria, this bill should be used to clean the yansh of baby gorillas, otherwise,we are ready. If this bill should , we are very ready for it 100%.
If I resided in the SE for 10 years for instance and I automatically became an indigene of SE, and then I wanted to buy a choice land in the SE and they will be telling me that the land is an ancestral land or community land and cannot be sold to a stranger and then somebody will now take me to one land beside a shrine and ask me to buy it, that's when they will know that I can break bottle on somebody's head. If you are pushing to become an indigene in another man's house, you had better think it twice now. If the bill is ed, we don't want to hear that Fulanis cannot be given free lands for ruga in the SE. Because many Northerners are married to Ibos and have been living in the SE before independence.

It's a demonic bill meant to erode cultural identity, and it will never sail. The proponent of this bill knows his intentions, and fortunately for us all, we know it too.

I think the wording of the bill is flawed.

Indigineship rights is a bit too strong because no matter how long you reside in an area that is not your ancestral home, you cannot be an Indigenous person.

However, the expansion of residency rights is a good move if properly presented.

That Law is sensitive.

Abuja and Lagos have higher population of settlers than indigenes, but Abuja does not have Governors, so the only State that has higher settlers to indigenous population capable of winning election is Lagos State.

Literally a Lagos Vs FG issue.

Me as an Igbo man I will reject the bill. We are not yet matured in of relationship with other tribes without being mischievous.
They should leave things the way they are and focus on useful bills to improve the lives of people.
All these are distraction.

They called the region Brown roof Republic but they are eyeing it.

They think making a Law towards that end will grant them the Region but they have forgotten that some people are also going to exploit this bill if it becomes law.

Careful, what you wish for and make sure your intentions are pure.

The people promoting this bill are the same gumbody gumbody gumbody people. The real unity beggars. Cowards they are and riddled with inferiority complex.

Today, they will claim to be the lost tribe of Israel, tomorrow they will tell you Ikwere is not a unique ethnic group (so as to steal ikwere land), over morrow, they will tell you that Lagos is a no-man's-land or not a Yorubaland (due to their greed and covetousness).

They are the same people sponsoring and encouraging terrorism against their own people in the name of freedom fighting. They are the sit-at-home goons (who call other cowards) but hide under their beds every Mondays for fear of getting murdered by their own "freedom fighters".

Instead of seeking to develop their own region and make it viable for other Nigerians, they kept encouraging the destruction of it (e.g through sit-at-home). Even their formal governors and leader have escape the region to live in other region.

The same mistake of greed and covetousness their forefathers did is what they've embarked upon today. While other region were undergoing developmental and pace setting projects that resulted to why their region is viable today (with many economic opportunities), their fathers were poking noses into others' regional policies and devising means to take over what belongs to others.

They will want you to practise one-nigerianess in your own land, overstretching your limited resources but will in their hypocrisy reject the same in their region.

In their region it is all about give us seccession, give us our gumbodyland or we die; but for them in others' region, it is about one-nigerianess. Their region is a gumbodyland while Lagos, Ibadan and others are a no-man-land where there must be equal opportunity for all.

They lack foresight with their promotion of this bill because their fellow land grabber, Fulani, will surely maximise on this bill and claim all of their ancestral land in near future.

Gumbody: Lagos is not a Yorubaland, We developed Lagos.
Normal human: But why is your region not as developed as Lagos?

Gumbody: "Invest in Lagos at your on perils"
Lagospidia: "#gumbodymustgo. Go back and develop your region too"
Gumbody: "aah, eeh, CNN, NTA, FIFA, NATO, WAEC, JAMB, BBC, HIV, come to our rescue o, they want to kill us"

Gumbody: give us presidency, give us sea ports, give us eloplane, give us elonkopta, give us fufu, give us eba... they hate us, look at me I'm a victim..., look at me I'm marginalised.

Fulanis licking their lips at this bill.

Sponsored by Igbos, but will be championed by the Fulanis when it sails through.

I wonder why some people don’t think things through.

Indigenous homelands must be protected.

However, every state must be encouraged to provide free zones for development of new cities. In essence, every state must have a piece of no man's land where no individual is allowed to own more than a specific number of plots of land to avoid monopolies and property tax must be fully enforced.
