AlphaSoul: The primary method used by archaeologists to date items remains the radiocarbon dating method. And since this method relies on dating organic materials like wood or charcoal that are found in the same archaeological stratum as the item to be dated, when metal items are found in non-archaeological contexts (i.e., above the ground), dating can become very difficult or even impossible.
