The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has officially launched its cargo freight service on the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, heralding a significant advancement in Nigeria’s logistics and transportation sector.
The announcement was made on Friday through the official X (formerly Twitter) of John Zhao, CCECC’s representative in Nigeria.
The inaugural journey, leveraging a cross-border rail transport model, commenced at the Ajuba Bonded Terminal, where cargo was transported to Apapa Port in Lagos.
Upon arrival, the goods were unloaded, and import containers were efficiently loaded for the return trip to the Ajuba Terminal, establishing a seamless and fully integrated logistics cycle for both import and export operations.
“CCECC recently launched its self-operated railway freight service in Nigeria with the inaugural run of a cargo train on the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, marking the official commencement of commercial freight operations.
“Utilizing a cross-border rail transport model, the train departed from the Ajuba Bonded Terminal and transported cargo to Apapa Port in Lagos. After unloading, it loaded import containers for the return journey and arrived at the Ajuba Terminal, establishing a seamless full-cycle bidirectional logistics chain for both import and export goods,” Zhao’s post read.
The launch of CCECC’s cargo freight service on the Lagos-Ibadan Railway follows the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s (NRC) recent approval of a 3-year operational license granted to CCECC.
What you should know The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has granted a three-year license to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to operate freight services on the Lagos-Ibadan standard-gauge railway line. Effective from October 14, 2024, to October 13, 2027, this authorization enables CCECC to provide public goods carriage along the critical rail corridor.
This license represents a major milestone for Nigeria’s rail sector as CCECC becomes the first company to receive authorization for standard-gauge rail freight services in the country.
- Constructed by CCECC and officially launched in June 2021, the Lagos- Ibadan Railway spans 157 kilometers with an additional 7-kilometer branch line. Built to modern railway standards, the line s speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour, seamlessly connecting Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, to Ibadan, a key industrial city in the southwest.
- By March 5, 2024, the Lagos-Ibadan Railway had operated safely for 1,000 days, transporting over 2 million engers, according to CCECC’s website. The company has also provided extensive operational , including technical assistance and workforce training programs.
Additionally, in February 2025, the NRC and APM Terminals Apapa relaunched the Apapa-Ibadan standard-gauge freight rail service. This service operates on a fixed schedule with departures every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, further boosting freight logistics along the rail corridor.

That's a totally NEW cargo service along the 157 kilometers Lagos-Ibadan Railway. Cargo delivery via rail ultimately reduces cost of transportation and production. The rail cargo model is the most effective solution for reducing the cost of food items and commodities coming from the North to the South of Nigeria and vice versa.
The rapid deployment of the cheaper CNG fuel cargo on CNG-fueled trains will be the ultimate game changer which I have always advocated for in the Nigerian business case study (even before the so-called 2023 subsidy removal) but all the governments at state and Federal levels are still busy pussyfooting on this model that would drastically drop the cost of food items in let's say Lagos State, Ogun State and Rivers State (when you plan with the market unions to avoid hoarding and artificial inflation). The state Governors are largely supposed to drive this price control/price reduction strategy instead of the Federal Government. It's totally irresponsible and stupid to relentlessly scapegoat just one man (i.e., President Tinubu) by highly ignorant people who do NOT realize that since the states and state Governors are closer to the people, price control or price regulation of transportation costs and high food costs is largely within the PURVIEW of the state Governors such as Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu or Dapo Abiodun for instance. All the 36 Nigerian Governors (especially those from the South of Nigeria) have to get serious right NOW by deploying CNG food trucks to break the monopoly of the private food trucks and bus owners of the NURTW who I read online have refused to reduce the high cost of transportation despite the significant drops in fuel prices!
Depending solely on Dangote Petrochemical Refinery or any other refinery to drive down the cost of transportation will NOT be effective due to the global FX and exchange rate costing of crude oil which is an international commodity. Since CNG is the cheapest fuel available, at an average of about N250/standard cubic feet of CNG, it would be a BETTER alternative to the more expensive PMS for lowering the cost of transportation and commodities for the masses. Dangote Petrochemical Refinery can still export their finished PMS and other petroleum byproducts to other countries and make huge profits in of FX returns.
This is good more publicity so that importers and exporters will use that line it’s cheaper to transport by rail less than 200l rather than pay truck 1.5m to carry similar containers

This country hasn't get it right yet, why would you give a company from a country that came to harvest, mine, park your resources free access to you most viable rail line direct access to shipping yards in Lagos? It means you gave a green light for them to be able to move the resources freely using the construction company as disguise. When are our leaders going to start taking responsibilities and stop eating fat at our expense.

The company that built the line is likely to do a better job running it.
And it is only a 3 year contract.
If they do a good job, the contract should be extended. Full stop.
Afterall, how many examples do we have of Nigerian contractors managing government assets properly. Not many.
Whaoo. This is massive , it is both positive and negative . It will affect trailer and truck operators a bit but it will impact positively on the earnings of companies and enhance more efficiency in good delivery . I believe this is just the beginning and they are nly using this to test their service ,they will soon open I to other states too
Mention any commercial activity that has been or is competently managed by a Nigerian public entity?
Should those of us who understand that deregulation, privatisation and capitalism are much better than government control socialism do more enlightenment work to build a critical mass of people who see beyond tribalism and rotation in allowing politicians emerge from among us into public office at the local, state and federal levels in the legislative and executive branches?

In short, the neo-black dilemma may be framed as follows: is it better to live under white rule without political dignity but with basic life-sustaining standards for many;
or to live under black rule with illusory political dignity and without basic life- sustaining standards for the majority?

The path forward for Africa lies in cultivating higher and adequate levels of personal and communal agential integrity as well as full personal responsibility and productivity. Not to mention creativity (including epistemic creativity), productive justice (such as merit and freedom), harmony and reconciliation at local and international levels, and a proper domestication of capitalism and other related values and institutions.
Africa must stop wasting her time on dreams of socialism because it is a system of wealth distribution primarily. Whereas, capitalism is a system of wealth creation primarily, and wealth has to be produced before it can be distributed.
