zendi: Why base your argument on Japan that does not have crude oil? Very funny analogy. Why not of OPEC?. Do Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran, Venezuela etc sell crude to their local refineries in dollars ? Again, Japan is not as import dependent as Nigeria, hence the Yen currency has relatively stable exchange rate against the dollar. So buying crude in dollars may not distort or dedtabilize the Japanese economy so much. Do you know the trade balance of Japan? Japan is heavy on exports. Nigeria is different; a struggling developing country with industries struggling for energy . It has very huge import dependence which works to weaken the local currency. Therefore buying crude in dollars in Nigeria would automatically create inflationary pressure in the economy because the dollar is always rising against the naira. It would also encourage round tripping and manipulation in the dollar FX market. One good way to make your economy strong and insulate it from uncertainties and fluctuations in the global market economy is to create value locally and ensure trade in the local economy is conducted in local currency. That is why all countries trade in their local currency in the local economy . Same reason Russia insisted that Europe must pay for it's oil and gas in the Russian currency in order to protect and insulate the Russian economy from the Western banking system which can me manipulated to frustrate or work against any country. Trading local crude oil in dollars in Ngeria will be a straight forward way to further destroy the Nigerian economy. Economic and national development is more about creating/adding value locally and insulating your economy ftom external shocks, more than just receiving dollars which encourages rent seeking in the long run. 5 Likes |

rmx: That's a defendable argument But let me present a counter When a company makes say x billion naira this year they can either pay out some in dividend, or reinvest into capital expansion that will increase the value of the firm long term.... If the dividend is paid out now, it is paid out as present value, t And the investor can do what they like with the proceeds However, if they go for capital expansion and truly the value of the firm rises in 5 years Using the last three years as a reference, inflation AND devaluation at that rate has "rendered useless" any capital gain over 5 years , making the argument that it was better to pay out the cash at period t, and t +1 when the naira still had more value values |

🟢 Midday Top 10 Performers So Far Stocks like MBENEFIT (+10%) and ETRANZACT (+9.52%) are showing strong gains today, but here’s the catch: most of them are trading with low amounts of money (less than ₦4M in value). 🔍 This means even though the prices are rising fast, not a lot of people are buying or selling them. 💡 So while the gains look good, it’s smart to also check the value and volume, not just the percentage increase. 1 Like 1 Share |
