A new book has revealed how former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, saved ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo from near bankruptcy before he emerged president in 1999.

According to the new book, entitled ‘’Too Good to Die: Third Term and the Myth of the Indispensable Man in Africa,’ Atiku made all his resources available for Obasanjo’s presidential campaign.

The book, written by former chairman of National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Chidi Odinkalu, and Ayisha Osori, author of ‘’Love Does Not Win Elections,” also revealed how Obasanjo beat late Alex Ekwueme to the presidential ticket of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 1999 election.

Quoting an from Atiku, the authors said the trio of Ibrahim Babangida, Theophilus Danjuma and Abdulsalami Abubakar wanted PDP to adopt Obasanjo as their presidential candidate “because they considered him the best person for the job.”

“Implicit in their position was their belief that they knew how to manipulate Obasanjo and the fact that Obasanjo did their bidding in 1979. They felt secure that he could be managed again,” the authors wrote.

Atiku was reportedly asked to a team to Ogun to inform Obasanjo that he was going to run for the highest office in the land.

“When Atiku and Obasanjo discussed the call to serve as president, Obasanjo said he could not be president because he was a nearly bankrupt ex-convict. Atiku, through General (Aliyu) Gusau, paid money into Obasanjo’s to begin his financial rehabilitation.

“Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar helped out by granting him an unconditional pardon. Atiku put everything he had at his disposal to Obasanjo’s emergence as the PDP presidential candidate and, when he ed the ticket as the vice-presidential nominee, continued to make his assets available to Obasanjo and the campaign.

“During a campaign stop in Atiku’s village, Jada, Adamawa State, Obasanjo spent a night in Atiku’s home. When he woke up the next day, he reportedly asked Atiku when he built the house and, to Atiku’s response, reportedly retorted: “(I) will never be poor again,’’ the book recounted.

Atiku served as vice-president to Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. He aspired to succeed Obasanjo in 2003 but the elder statesman went ahead to complete another term.

By 2007 when Obasanjo’s second term ended, both men had fallen apart. Obasanjo’s plan to go for a third term was also said to have worsened their dispute.

Obasanjo recently kicked against Atiku’s presidential ambition, saying the former vice-president “can never enjoy” his for a political office.

Sources close to the APC with knowledge of the way the Primaries unfolded have revealed that it was Rivers State Governor, A[b]maechi who flew back to Rivers State and returned to Lagos on Thursday morning with enough dollars to make Benjamin Franklin blush.[/b]

It has been revealed that Atiku offered the delegates $5000 each, but Amaechi doubled it to $10000 a pop. Thus turning the tables in favour of General Buhari.

Since his adventure into the APC, Amaechi has gone out of his way to prove himself a party loyalist, always the first to shoki or azonto at the many events the APC holds, which he himself is usually the chief sponsor.

According to party insiders, Amaechi has overtaken Tinubu as the major financier of the party. One does not need to wonder why he is always at President Jonathan’s throat over misappropriated oil wells or other such business. Anything that diminishes from the State’s coffers will have a ripple effect on his funding budget for the APC.

Atiku , Obi and El Rufai all contributed more than their fair share in destroying the PDP and paving the way for the APC.


Atiku floated the nPDP to destroy and weaken the PDP towards ousting Jonathan from power and paving the way for Buhari to take over .

Obi has a history of undermining PDP in his Anambra and later the SE when GEJ foolishly made Obi his SE campaign director which didn't sit well with old and seasoned PDP stalwarts in the region. Obi's refusal to disburse campaign funds up till the very last minute and in paltry amounts is what led to voter apathy in the SE . As campaign director for the SE, Obi's malfescence contributed to low voter turnout in the region.

El Rufai has been a thorn to the PDP even as a federal appointed minister under the party. He began his midget moves against he party after Yaradua refused to make him a part of his government just as he is now doing to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu APC govt for refusing to give him a ministerial appointment.

If Atiku wants to achieve his presidential ambition before ing his ancestors....he should make some difficult sacrifice of stepping aside and allowing Peter Obi to become the flagbearer of their coalition with Tambuwal/Bala Mohammed/etc as running mate with some solid signed agreement that Obi will do single tenure and allow Atiku continue in 2031...and Atiku too will do only single tenure for El Rufai to continue in 2036 to complete the North's 8 years and the ticket goes back to South for another popular Southerner to continue.



Without this.....the coalition will fail and Tinubu will continue and after Tinubu....Ribadu will take over

Spending money on primaries is entirely different from funding the party. Atiku can spend all he has on primaries but lacked the capability to fund the party consistently before and after election.
