Despite the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s decision, the House of Representatives ratified the move through a voice vote, a method that has sparked further debate over the crisis in the oil-rich state.

Bashiru, who represents Oshodi/Isolo in Lagos State under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissed criticisms over the voting process, insisting that the House is empowered to determine its operational procedures.

“The point that I’m making is that it’s also constitutional that the House is going to determine the way it operates on an everyday basis,” he said on Sunday Politics on Channels Television. “That is the law.”

“The Rules Are Different”

Bashiru argued that while the House has previously used electronic voting in some instances, it is not mandated to do so for all decisions.

“Well, it depends on what we’re doing in of the rule. I’ll give you an example. When you look at the last time, we also had electronic voting when we were going to elect the speaker [Femi Gbajabiamila]. It’s different from what happened this time when we’re going to elect the speaker [Tajudeen Abbas]. So the rules are different,” he explained.

He maintained that voice voting is a common practice in the House, adding, “I don’t think this particular situation is different.”
