I live in a house where the landlord recently installed a prepaid meter for me and another tenant. Before this single meter was installed, both of us had been paying our estimated electricity bills regularly. After the new meter was installed, we noticed it had a debt of N2m+ on it. We later found out that this debt came from the landlord’s sawmill business in his name, but he still went ahead and installed the same meter for us tenants to use. He got another one for his own apartment and wife's shop which has a debt of 200k+ on it (meter by installment). Since the debt was already on the meter, we couldn’t recharge it or load any new electricity token. I called the DISCO to ask why, and they explained that the reason we can’t buy tokens is probably because of the large debt attached to the meter. Tried 12k, 14k, 16k but none went through. Because of this problem, I disconnected from the meter, connected to direct, and applied for my own personal prepaid meter, which is still being processed. Yesterday, the landlord told me to go to the nepa office to settle the issue with the indebted meter. He also said that nepa guys will soon come around to check for illegal connections or meter by. He wan make me help am dey offset him incurred debt of N2m+ 1 Like |

How can you continue living with such a dubious selfish man as your landlord? Even if you have your own prepaid metre installed, you will hardly have peace there It's time to move out ! 1 Like |

Tenshades: This is truly annoying. Is there a way you can recover the remaining rent ? |
Tenshades(m): 5:58am On Mar 19 |
doggedfighter: I'd rather move out and hold the keys till the rent expires than go low with the man. Previous tenant of the second apartment packed out silently around 4am in 2023 before her rent expired like someone who was stealing. I now see the reason why. 3 Likes |

Your landlord should have also process an extra pre paid meter for the tenants use, while the use of the new pre paid meter with 2M debt will be terminated without disruption to the wiring and debt

nifemi25: Through Opay or Palmpay Select ''More'' then ''Electricity'' in opay OR ''Electricity'' in palmpay Then choose your DISCO and fill your meter number and proceed, you will see the outstanding debt if there's any. 1 Like |

Buy solar module N300k, battery N300k others N300k and forget useless PHCN service. When you move out you can have your N900k worth of things instead of battling with another man's debt.

Tenshades: He's a truly wicked man. He didn't even have the conscience to make the initial recharge on the metre so it can function and then the tenants may not notice his fraud . But no, he wants to play everyone. A devil he is ! |

Tenshades:. Thanks for the response... I just input the meter number to my opay but it's unfortunate it couldn't bring the outstanding debt out... 1 Like |

nifemi25: Check palmpay too. It's possible that there's no outstanding debt on it since it's not showing. |

**UPDATE ** The landlord went to the NEPA office himself this morning. I forwarded the meter number to him, and he called back to say the minimum recharge amount that would go through is 20k. I asked him to stay on the line so he could relay that message directly to the other tenant. The other tenant responded immediately, saying we are not paying any 20k. That’s when we brought up the N2 million debt already attached to the meter in his name. He acted clueless, pretending like the debt was news to him. He kept going, “You should have informed me nau... aaaaaaaaahhhhh,” and “N2 million ke?” I told him we are all in these streets and I don't act spontaneously in such situation. After all the back and forth, the clown finally agreed to have the meter removed and leave us on a direct connection. |

Tenshades: Hey chief , how have you been holding up with the light issues , I am quite interested in how you are able to apply for another prepaid, was it that you sent a letter copying Nerc and consumer protection , how did you go about opening another without the landlord's knowledge and would hat exonerate you from the debts owed |

ThaRealist: Baba... I applied and paid for the meter directly at the state ministry (state govt subsidized). After paying, I was told to bring a billing to the meter with. I called the nepa guy in charge of the billing (the guy who brings nepa bill to my area), he said I should talk to the landlord for permission. I spoke to the landlord and gave permission. I called the nepa guy again and he requested 30k for new billing processing which I didn't settle with. Few days after, the 2nd tenant and I called the landlord out cos of the indebted meter he installed for us. The landlord acted dumb as if he's not aware of the N2m debt. All hell was let loose. My light was disconnected that night. The landlord later connived with the nepa guy not to do the billing for me so I won't have my meter processed without it. It was my inside man in the nepa office who made it known to me. The idiotic landlord is byes his own meter while the one he connected tenants to can't be used. The nepa guy alerts him anytime they want to come for meter inspection. I've been in total blackout since that day I called him out. |
