The excitement and euphoria of being sworn in as Nigeria's president overtook Tinubu’s reasoning, which led him to make that thoughtless statement: 'subsidy is gone.'
That thoughtless statement, followed by the floating of the naira, brought untold hardships on Nigerians, and this country will never recover from it.
Subsidy removal was supposed to be a gradual process, ensuring first that our refineries were operational and implementing measures to mitigate its effects on Nigerians.
There was no justification for the price of petrol to rise from below ₦200 to over ₦1,350 per liter in such a short time.
It was pure wickedness and draconian by the Tinubu regime in the way it handled the subsidy removal and floating of the naira.
If Dangote Refinery and other refineries were operational before the subsidy removal, the price of petrol wouldn't have gone beyond ₦400 per liter, and transportation costs, food prices, goods, and services wouldn’t have skyrocketed to the extent that they have
Suspending subsidy and stabilising the forex exchange are steps every right minded politician knows needed to be done. but no one had the courage.
Tinubu had the courage and has done it once and for all. Why postpone a needed change.
You think Dangote will sell at N167, or you suggest we pay subsidy to Dangote too? `will that change anything?
God bless Tinubu for his courage

Let the competition continue—Dangote should eliminate all these importers by dropping the price to N650. That way, the importers will have no choice but to buy from him until it becomes cheaper to import.
U don't know how evil these pple are.....their progress is based on Nigerians sufferings....they will rather bomb dangote refinery to the ground than end their importation and fuel subsidy collection

Exactly but for greediness and selfishness he decided to be selling fuel above what is normal.
We all rejoice when is refinery is coming on stream thinking that it will lessen the price because that would have eliminate the overhead land cost but he choose to be selling his fuel above 1k initially. This is part what prompted FG to resume import fuel to break the monopoly and God bless them for it.
Like you said, selling for 650 or less would have discouraged fuel importing totally but his greediness and capitalist intent wouldn't allow him, just want to milk people dry. I pray more refinery or modular refinery come on stream to challenge his Monopoly, that will be absolute better for we masses. Imagine having only MTN as only license telecom carrier, you will agree with me, many wouldn't have be able to afford even Sim card or phone by now. I pray FG get it right in downstream sector also.
My brother, that's a private business. They have financial projections. Investors want to recoup their monies while they are still alive. Dangote would have pushed his competitors out of business if it wasn't NNPC he's doing this with.

It has absolutely nothing to do with courage. It is a lack of planning and wickedness.
It is pure wickedness to subject Nigerians to such hardships.
Subsidy removal was supposed to be a gradual but sustained process.
Worldwide, that's how things are done.
I know very well that the price wasn't going to remain at ₦165 per liter; it would have risen to something around ₦400, but not over ₦1,350 in such a short time, inflicting untold hardships on Nigerians.

Subsidy removal was supposed to come after the refineries had been activated and started producing fuel.

He truly removed subsidy to protect the future of our children
Why did he and Fayemi play politics during the 2012 Ojota fuel deregulation protests, using Buhari's 2011 running mate? That was the year Tinubu described Buhari as expired.
How much do you think petrol would cost now, 13 years after, if APC did not play with our economic wellbeing back then
Omooba77:
…says Nigeria experienced economic development during Jonathan’s istration
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, on Tuesday, said the protest that trailed the fuel subsidy removal during the istration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 was due to political interests.
Fayemi said this in his keynote address delivered at a national dialogue organised to celebrate the 60th birthday celebration of the founding National Secretary of Alliance for Democracy and Fellow, Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Professor Udenta Udenta in Abuja.
The programme was attended by Jonathan, former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili; former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, among others.
The PUNCH reports that on January 1, 2012, President Goodluck announced the removal of fuel subsidy and adjusted the pump price of petrol from N65 per litre to N141.
The decision sparked mass protests, tagged ‘Occupy Nigeria’ across major cities of the country.
The price was later re-adjusted to N97, after more than a week of protests.
Petrol price was later reduced to N87 in 2015.
Jonathan faced serious backlash for the fuel price adjustment, especially from leaders of the All Progressives Congress, who were then in different opposition parties, including the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressives Congress, All Nigeria Peoples Party, and All Progressive Grand Alliance.

It should continue going down until it gets to #500 per liter.
Dangote should do the needful and reduce it further.
Oil marketers/importers should keep their import license with them and be ready to import fuel in case Dangote want to do otherwise and start increasing price.
Anything to favour Nigerian masses is what we want.

I’m sure he will do that eventually when competition becomes very stiff. Doing so now will hurt his profit inflow.
At the moment, he’s leveraging on current high price to rake in profit the checkmate move will come soon.

I don’t know how old you are but you typed like a child… how many years have we been trying to make our refineries operational? Doesn’t that tell you internal saboteurs and the main beneficiaries of the subsidy won’t let that happen? The best thing to happen to Nigeria is complete subsidy removal. I wish we allowed GEJ remove subsidy in 2012… by now we would have moved past this stage. However, the next best time to correct a wrong is now and I’m happy that has been done!

Then when he has succeeded in eliminating them he increases the fule price at will. Just as he has done in the cement industry
Eliminating, in that context, means selling way below the landing cost of imported petrol, not eliminating imports. It’s a deregulated market; everyone should have access.

Whatever price reduction we are seein now has nothing to do with any Tinubu or whatever ... int'l market price is on a free fall

Go build yours and sell for 200. Your government is selling for how much again? Instead of blaming their government, they are focusing on a private enterprise who has freedom to do what he does. Do you even know what he faced behind the scenes with Tinubu? Do you have an idea what it takes to run a business, especially in a country like Nigeria? How many people do you think will be able to pull off a refinery in a country as corrupt as Nigeria? Not everything is to be said online. All I'll say is kindly keep quiet, if you have no idea what's going on behind the scene. Try to look for who knows who to know about the behind the scenes politics
