Neda Imasuen, Nigerian Senate ethics chairman who suspended Natasha Akpoti, barred for life in New York for fraud, gross misconduct

ADEFEMOLA AKINTADE

Neda Imasuen, chair of the Senate Committee on Ethics that recommended the suspension of Natasha Akpoti, has been stripped of his bar licence in New York, U.S., over allegations of multimillion-dollar fraud and gross misconduct.

A document obtained by Peoples Gazette showed that Mr Imasuen had been disbarred for life in New York after he swindled his client, absconding with representation fees without making an appearance for her in court.

The Gazette spoke with a court officer who said Mr Imasuen was permanently disbarred after collecting money from a client and failing to represent her. He also refused to comply with the disciplinary ’s attempt to investigate his misconduct.

Daphne Shyfield hired Mr Imasuen to represent her on a matter in 2009 and paid him tens of millions of dollars for legal fees.

Instead of appearing for Ms Shyfield, Mr Imasuen absconded with the money, a move that triggered a morass of petitions, given that his actions contravened existing New York bar code and rules.

Despite being served with petitions on multiple occasions in the U.S., Mr Imasuen failed to respond to any of the petitions and did not ask for an extension of time to file a response.

The Edo South senator, instead, fled to Nigeria with Ms Shyfield’s funds to lay low and escape disciplinary actions from the Grievance Committee, the body responsible for issuing rulings for the infractions of jurists.

Following several failed attempts to obtain a response to petition files, the Grievance Committee for the Second, Eleventh, and Thirteenth Judicial Districts terminated Mr Imasuen’s licence to practice law in New York.

“Neda B. Imasuen, itted as Neda Bernards Imasuen, is disbarred, and his name is stricken from the roll of attorneys and counselors-at-law,” reads a decision of the Grievance Committee on May 10, 2010.

“Neda Bernards Imasuen is commanded to desist and refrain from (1) practicing law in any form, either as principal or agent, clerk, or employee of another, (2) appearing as an attorney or counsellor-at-law before any court, judge, justice, board, commission, or other public authority,” reads a notice of his disbarment.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, Mr Imasuen, 66, rode on the waves of the Labour Party to win the Edo South senatorial poll in 2023 and wormed his way to becoming the chair of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions.

That the same man with a 15-year-old history of disregarding petitions was now heading the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions called into question the integrity —if any, of the people in the nation’s leadership positions.

Last Wednesday, Mr Imasuen was quick to dismiss Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the ground that it did not follow due process.

The Edo senator dismissed the petition as “dead on arrival” because Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan signed the document, which he said violated the Senate rule book. He later accepted it on Friday after the female lawmaker resubmitted it with the signature of her constituent’s member.

Mr Imasuen did not immediately return comments on his New York disbarment.

His disbarment is typical of many Nigerian politicians who commit crimes on foreign soil and flee to Nigeria with fraud proceeds, with which they contest elections.

Former speaker and the president’s chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, got his law licence terminated by the State Bar of Georgia in the U.S. over his corruption and ethical lapses. He itted to stealing $25,000 from his client.

Mr Imasuen’s disbarment by the New York Supreme Court adds yet a new name to the growing list of individuals with tainted pasts occupying high-ranking government positions in Nigeria.

Yes! It's a club! You must have those sterling qualities to belong. Only criminals can make it. Just look at the credentials of all our so called Leaders in Nigeria, you have a common feature, indictment for crimes.

Now, the Monarchs are added to the list

It serves him well, but I have problem with Americans, they could not punish a sexual predator and convicted felon like Donald trump, they still went ahead and put him in the white house, the highest office in the united states

America no longer have the moral com to do such thing, they have already set a bad example for others to follow, gone are those days

Old News can't be used to degrade Natasha's shameless behaviour in the Senate Chamber hence we are not interested. AI Green was reprimanded by US Congress last week for similar rude behaviour.

What's the relationship between the behaviour of that shameless blackmailer and the news being reported? None.

Razor Gazsetti should stop embarrassing journalism. I have search online for the said client who paid " tens of millions of dollars " but I found nothing about the name
Daphne Shyfield.

I believe an individual that is capable to pay tens of millions of dollar must be a big bag with a single search that will bring information about the person.

Even if it's written clearly there, those who will want to jubilate on old news can never see that part.

Labour Party Senator is the Chairman of Ethics and conduct who engineered the suspension of Natasha.

So as how hypocritical some of the Obidients have been including their principal Peter Obi

They should include his blood type too. So we can believe that anyone that has his blood type behaves like him too.

Neda Imasuen was the Chairman of the ethics committee. He did not unilaterally come up with the recommendations to suspend his table mate.

Can People's Gazette also release dirt on the following persons who did not Natasha Akpoti:

1. Mrs Ireti Kingibe
2. Mrs Florence Ita-Giwa
3. Mrs Abiodun Olujinmi
4. Mr Ayo Arise
5. Mr Adams Oshiomole
6. Mrs Remi Tinubu, and
7. Mrs Natasha Akpoti?

Concerning the last name: if she ed her own behaviour of quarreling in the senate, why did she rush to court to obtain a court order stopping the probe into her conduct?

Again, we ask: why was the matter of sexual harassment brought to the fore when it became convenient for her to do so?

As for Neda Imasuen, he should explain to us his own side of the allegations.

In summary, let us allocate blames properly:

1. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for unethical conduct in yelling on the floor of the senate after refusing to move to her re-allocated seat and crying victimization on of her claim that the camera could not catch her and she won't also catch the eye of the presiding officer. She also erred in going to a television station to report sexual harassment instead of reporting to the senate or code of conduct bureau. Recall Saraki was docked as senate president by the Code of Conduct Tribunal. She failed to take her case properly. It is also curious that the matter was not reported when it occurred, but only came up as a seeming defense against her own unethical conduct.

2. Senator Akpabio who has demonstrated a historical lack of self-control in his submissions and unprofessional conduct. Recall that as NDDC minister, he accused representatives of being contractors which led to the "off your mic" saga. He was also said to have been slapped for sexual advances against a former acting MD of NDDC. His nightclub comment against Mrs Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan seems to have been unforgiven by her. Also, his flippancy sometimes has led many to believe that there was assault. He also had nonbusiness presiding over the report that recommended suspension of the person who accuses him. Finally, the Facebook post by his aide saying Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan wore transparent clothing and walked seductively was damaging to his brand.

3. Senators who want to protect themselves, and had no balls to caution Akpabio in public or in private.

Finally, the substance of the accusations against the senate president needs to be examined. Did the things Akpabio was accused of constitute sexual harassment? This matter must be investigated.

PS: General advise to men and women. When there is inappropriate behaviour or comments directed at you, document it and have witnesses. That way you protect yourself against future conduct and have a record against the bully.
