Hello everyone,

I’m at a crossroads in my career and could really use some advice from those with experience. I’m a 30-year-old male, and I’ve been teaching for several years now. While I appreciate the experience, I can’t shake the feeling of stagnation—I haven’t truly advanced in my field or made significant strides related to my course of study.

Now, I want to take a bold step forward, but I’m torn between two paths:

Pursuing a Master’s degree to deepen my expertise and possibly open up better opportunities in my current field.
Starting afresh by enrolling in a university to study a computer-related course, since tech is a field I find intriguing and potentially rewarding.
I’d love to hear from those who have faced similar decisions or have insights into the best path forward. Which option do you think offers better prospects in the long run?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

What was your first discipline? And what kind of job are you doing currently? Are you employed as a permanent appointment as government teacher?

I can see that from your reply’s you studied Biochemistry. Instead of going for a masters degree please use that savings and start your ICAN journey. You’ll never regret it.

In 1918, A young dude who didn't have the opportunity to study Biochemistry like you invented ALABUKUN POWDER using acetylsalicylic as it's active ingredient.

In 1979 Alhaji Safiriyu Tiamiyu popularly known as S.T began what was referred to as S.T Soaps Limited with the amount of 5,000 naira. He didn't study Biochemistry.

2025, Biochemistry graduates are complaining of no jobs and thereby taking up teaching jobs.

As Biochemistry grads dey find jobs up and down, OLOSHO wey no go school dey sell organic creams and cash out big. grin grin grin

May God heal our land and heal all of us.
God bless Nigeria.

You can for a tech course, you didn't really need a degree in computer science to start a career in tech.

Since you have a biochemistry background, your focus should be on how to improve biochemistry using tech, find solutions to biochemistry problem using tech and see money flow into your .

Hello everyone,

Looking forward to your thoughts!

You don't need utme or university degree before you can go into tech.

What area of tech do you want to do? Can you be the best of the best in that area?

If you can then the sky is not even a limit.

I wish you all the best.

Coursera has snippets of lessons on any tech skills you'd love to have. Take your time to and follow the course through. Use the certificate together your Bsc to apply for a master's degree program in that course, especially outside of the country. University of the West of Scotland (UWS) can offer you that.

Meanwhile there are people working in super cool places with just WHO DO YOU KNOW certification.
anyway, try masters. I wonder why UTME even came to your mind.

You see that master's, please don't try it. Learn a saleable skill with all dedication, and you'll be fine. Nigeria we are today does not value certificate as before. Hit the street like you never had certificate, and build connection. I am talking from experience.

Bros, can u go for medical degree or pharmacy?

I think it would be much more rewarding than that gizmo tech bubble( if u are still interested in tech u can go for diploma in computer stuff & top it it with necessary certificates).

But u see that medical line, U would be hot cake abroad & even in Nigeria u fit get good job easily.

One of my friends, switched to MBBS two years after graduation, He don Japa to U.k since. While I am busy dealing with tulumbu disaster over here

Don't bother taking UTME for a computer course.
It will be a waste of time and resources.

If you are mainly career/financial driven.
Research various tech fields, choose one you like and has
potential. Then plan on self education/mentorship for a start and aim
to get into programs like Andela's.

But if you are more of the education focused type, go for masters.

Guy, your lucky day is here. You are a champ inside, but you don't know.

Here is what you should do:

Learn data science on your own. There are free materials out there. It is tough, but very doable. Then, push in for masters in any genetical related course. Boom. That's it.

There are still other routes you can take...but trust me, what I have given you up there is the foundation of what you can do. The sky is just the beginning bro. I said...the sky is just the beginning. Trust me.

Obviously, you may not easily find a way out of Naija cos of the 2-2 you have except you have real money to move to the UK which is the path I will advise you to take for fast result. But hmmmm....there are still ways you can navigate it and get it done. As long as you don't just start crying that you are old...you want to marry fast .....you want to have kids....papa and mama are saying they want grand kids.....yahoo boys don dey hammer and me a dey with nothing..... as long as you don't allow these things stop you. The sky is just the beginning because you studied one of the best course out there...and 2 - 2 isn't bad at all.

You may try masters in Moutain Top University owned by Mountain of Fire Ministries and Miracle. Prof. D.K Olukoya, the founding professor of the department is a renowned genetics expert with over 70 publications, but I am sure he has
written more papers since he has returned to the classroom in the institution. Masters in genetics, masters in biotechnology, etc can be a good start. Blend whatever related genetical program you can get into up with analytical predictive skills by studying data science. Na you go dey run away from offers that will locate you when you are very good in that area.

Good luck mate!

Go for masters and apply for some tech courses online
chaseblack(m): 8:58am On Feb 28
I don't know how to advise you, I was teaching post NYSC too, went for Masters at 28 now I have M.SC in Plant Cytogenetics hoping I'll be able to lecture. I'm 32 and I don't think I'll ever be able to lecture and I haven't seen any research institute in Nigeria advertising for a vacant position.
The work I'm doing now doesnt even relate to my course of study.

You can have a M.sc for the sake of it but it won't advance your career If you are not already working in that field. However, I can assure you you'll improve your earnings but you won't be rich!

Rather go for PGDE then M.sc in education, you can have 3 Msc before you clock 40 years and you'll be a big shot in the education sector with your experience.
