… Issues Stop Work Order, Arrests Suspected Operators

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, has launched a massive clampdown on illegal dredgers operating in the State, ordering them to stop work immediately.

This exercise, which was carried out by the officials of the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, is aimed at curbing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable development across the waterfront schemes located across the coastal regions of the metropolis.

The enforcement operation, led by Hon. Ekundayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, alongside of his team, raided several illegal dredging sites which were subsequently shut down by the officials of the Ministry. Some suspected dredging operators were arrested and a stop-work order was served on erring dredgers for non-compliance with laid-down regulations of the State Government.

Alebiosu warned the operators that failure to comply with extant laws guiding dredging activities could have dire effects and will result in severe penalties, including total closure of the sites.

Reacting to the claim that Dredgers are the major cause of environmental degradation in the state, including erosion and flooding, the Commissioner emphasised the need for dredging activities to be conducted lawfully to preserve roads, public infrastructure, and wetlands. He explained that the State Government has vowed to streamline the activities of dredgers in the state to meet acceptable international standards.

The Lagos State Government's clampdown on illegal dredgers is a significant step towards protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development in the state. We will continue to carry out surveillance and raids across the coastal areas to ensure that the activities of a few don't impact the lives of law-abiding citizens negatively”. Alebiosu stated.

Let them help themselves first! There's nothing the government can do that you won't find fault in them!

Something is illegal you'll still find excuses!

Big man will have money to perfect his papers. If you know any big man dredging illegally then be a whistle blower if you have the balls!

I know you'll say the same thing for those involved in drugs and fake foods!

Very funny comment. You think a poor person can acquire a dredging site? Those dredging sites are owned by rich men.

Okay.
Let’s be sincere here…
Government itself needs to be transparent across board first.
Dredging manchine and every needed equipment is over 800 million naira.
How much be license? Last I heard total was about 16 million.
Does it make sense that someone with over 800 million Naira equipment won’t have such license?
But the council, the chiefs, the Oba’s , the Urban and regional planing are the problems.
Basically, The government is the problem.
There are areas that doesn’t have much sand or too much silt, this are the areas that they will give you license to operate.
The chiefs in connection with the power that be will be the owner of those area with better sand and less silt underneath the water .
You will need to operate under them, even though they don’t have license.
And lots of other mago mago.
A dredger I know that works with the Chinese people even told me they want to move to Ibafo and Thry will have a dumping site in Begger, where they will need to get about 10 Trucks that will basically work only at midnight to get those sand to Berger.
We both talk about how expensive and how unrealistic this is.
Wetin the Omoonile, police and those chiefs dry take their eye see.
This is just how fed up they’re.
