As Plot To Install Seyi Tinubu As Govenor Thickens
Stakeholders Finalise Moves On New Speaker
Barring any last minute change, the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mojisola Meranda is set to resign from her role.

Her resignation is pending the conclusion of work by a high-powered committee of former Governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, Akinwunmi Ambode, among others, commissioned by President Bola Tinubu to handle the matter.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the tussle to lead the state parliament in Lagos has been in the news in the last few weeks, especially with the January 13 removal of immediate-past Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

The Assembly has enmeshed in crisis since Obasa’s removal, with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) unable to find a solution.

A source within the GAC told OSUN DEFENDER on Tuesday that the new committee after consultations with President Tinubu last week met with the Assembly and the GAC separately over the weekend where some consensus were reached.

Among the agreements reached is for the Speakership of the Assembly to return to Lagos West where Obasa came from, noting that Meranda’s choice would retain two powerful seats in Lagos Central where Governor Sanwo-Olu also comes from.

The source hinted, “There have been several meetings on the Lagos Speakership issue. A lot of people have been meeting Mr. President over the matter. While Obasa is trying to come back, most of his colleagues do not want him, a move that led them to on her a vote of confidence last week.

“Meranda is not the problem but the issue of power sharing. As widely reported, Baba Akande, Baba Osoba, former Governor Ambode and others in the President’s team met the lawmakers and GAC separately at the Governor’s Lodge, Marina. The resolutions reached covered Meranda and Obasa reg their positions so a new Speaker can come from Lagos West to balance power sharing.

“Obasa is a trusted ally of Asiwaju but he has lost the confidence of his colleagues. That is why when Meranda wanted to resign last week, she was stopped by the lawmakers. They want her there. The lawmakers are united. Meetings have been held and I think a solution is in the offing.

“With the agreements reached, the most experienced Lawmaker from Lagos West, Badagry Constituency II to be precise – David Setonji may be the new Speaker. He is experienced and currently the Chief Whip appointed by Meranda. Once the President ratifies the arrangement at another meeting this week, Meranda and Obasa will resign and there will be peace,” the source added.

Sanwo-Olu’s Impeachment May Top Setonji’s Assignment – Findings

Findings by OSUN DEFENDER, however, revealed that top on the agenda of Setonji’s leadership, if his Speakership is raitified by both the President’s committee and GAC, may be the impeachment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

A top source within the state executive committee of the APC in Lagos State told OSUN DEFENDER that Tinubu is still angry with Sanwo-Olu over Obasa’s impeachment without his endorsement.

The source added that Sanwo-Olu’s exit will therefore pave way for Seyi Tinubu’s installation as the next Governor of the state.

The source stated that, “Asiwaju is still not happy with the role Sanwo-Olu played in Obasa’s removal. He believes everything was orchestrated by the Governor. From what I know, the sitting governor footed the impeachment process of Obasa and played a neutral game. You will see that nothing pointed to him in the initial stage.

“However, the truth is that when Obasa disrespected Sanwo-Olu during the budget presentation last year, Oga found a way to deal with him. That is why have been adamant on Obasa leaving. The Governor does not want him again. The President felt as the leader, he should be carried along and wants him out.

“Tinubu knows one of the men that can stop his son, Seyi, from becoming Governor is Jide (Governor Sanwo-Olu). That is why they want him out so his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, can take over. Hamzat will also be made to sign an agreement that he will not contest against Seyi. Without that, he won’t take over from Sanwo. That is the game Setonji will come and deliver. The plot is to resolve the Assembly crisis first so they can pounce on the Governor.

“We wait and see sha. Lagos politics ahead of 2027 may take a new turn and will be interesting. We await what happens.”

Some other of the party called on the party leadership to strengthen Lagos APC ahead of the next elections so as to allow the party to retain its winnings over the years.
