The Anambra House of Assembly has ed a resolution calling on the National Agency for Food and Drug istration and Control to reopen the Onitsha Drug Market closed on February 9.

The lawmakers, who ed the resolution during the plenary session on Tuesday, said the closure of the market had put the livelihood of at least 10,000 traders, apprentices, and their dependants in danger.

The resolution followed a motion of ‘Urgent Public Importance’ by Mr Tony Moubike (Aguata Constituency 2).

Mr Moubike said NAFDAC should hasten its ongoing inspection process to conclude and reopen the market in no distant time in the people’s interest.

The assembly also called on the market leadership to establish strict monitoring structures to identify and report illicit activities within the market.

Mr Moubike lamented that many innocent traders and apprentices were suffering for an offence they had no hand in.

He also said that many apprentices, who are youths, may be lured into social vices, including crime and criminality, should the market closure persist.

The speaker, Somtochukwu Udeze, said they had received numerous appeals and concerns from of the public regarding the prolonged closure.

Mr Udeze said the procedure adopted by the agency for the drug inspection was causing undue hardship to the people and called for the quick reopening of the market.

The South-East is notorious for counterfeit goods, including health products.

Why closing a whole market? The drug section is just 2 to 3 lines of shops while there are over 80 to 100 lines selling different things

This are market where they have to clothing section, building materials section, cosmetic section, foodstuffs station etc. Its a big market...

You can't close down the whole market instead close the affected section of the market.

What has someon who sells vegetables n red oil got to do with this matter that u close down sources of livelihood.

It's totally wrong to shut down an entire market for the crimes of others - even if they are in the majority.

[Genuine sellers cannot be paying for the crimes of evil people. Doing so defeats the essence of goodness.
[/b]
Pick out the evil folks and deal with them ruthlessly.

Nafdac should open that market now before I issue my own statement, what nonsense! I know the game Tinubu is playing, I can tell him that I can beat him to that game, I'm not new to Nigerian politics. Somebody should warn Tinubu for me o, I don't want to him. There's hunger already in my stomach, he shouldn't dare me the more

Igbos Acquiescence With Evil

It's not shocking that this kind of thought has been nursed in the first place. In spite of the weight of ghoulish evidence surrounding this immoral act of selling fake or expired drugs to of the public, they are asking for soft landing for these malefactors.

Culturally, something is amiss in this people's cultural system: their moral sense has been turned off for filthy gains.

How is the market notorious? What kind of narrative are you pushing? The Onitsha market is not the only market in the country where we have discovered fake products. Why is it the only market to be closed?

If nafdac where proactive I’m not sure there would be fake drugs... original drugs are expensive people resort to use fake drugs because they can’t afford the original one... nafdac should fix that first!

Why we welcome the effort made my nafdac to help eradicate drugs not licensed, expired drugs and revalidation of expired drugs the closure of the whole market is unaccessible

This are market where they have vegetables sellers, foodstuff, cosmetics, building materials etc.
My aged parents has not been able to go to market n sell despite what they sell is not in anyway related to drugs or close to that section.

Whst will they eat? This is a period where there is hunger in the land

State assembly , una dey ment? Instead of putting the lives of the entire nation at risk, is it not better for these shops to be under lock and key until investigation is concluded? Let Dem and their dependants go to hell.
