Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida on September 15, 2010 declared his intention to contest the 2011 Presidential election.

Babangida, later wrote the then national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Okwwesilieze Nwodo, to formally announce his withdrawal from the presidential primaries held on January 13 2011.

The presidential election, held on April 16 2011 was won by Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP who defeated General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (C).

IBB has always nursed the ambition to become a civilian president. There was a rumour of a pact between OBJ, Abdulsalam and IBB.

Bamaiyi in his book "Vindication of a General" said the issue of who would take over from former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar was never discussed at the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) but he ‘later found out that Generals Babangida and Aliyu Gusau (former NSA) went several times to see General Abubakar and convinced him to General Obasanjo’s candidacy."

He revealed that "this was not done because they liked Obasanjo but because of the ambition of General Babangida to return as president after Obasanjo’s tenure.
