Labour productivity, as defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), measures the total volume of output—expressed in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)—produced per unit of labour in productive countries in Africa.

This is typically assessed by the number of employed persons or total hours worked within a given period. Essentially, it reflects how efficiently labour contributes to economic output.

Africa, with its youthful and expanding workforce, has immense economic potential.
However, many nations struggle with low productivity.

Despite these challenges, some countries out-perform others, with Libya leading the continent in labour productivity at $29.8 GDP per hour worked, followed closely by Algeria and Egypt, per data from Ilostat.

Top 10 African Countries Most Productive
1. Libya ($29.8 per hour worked)

Libya’s economy is heavily reliant on its vast oil reserves, which drive its high productivity. However, political instability and conflict have stifled long-term economic growth and diversification.

2. Algeria ($28.2 per hour worked)
Algeria’s productivity is largely fueled by its hydrocarbon sector, particularly oil and natural gas. The government has been making efforts to diversify its economy, but state control and bureaucracy remain challenges.

3. Egypt ($27.1 per hour worked)
Egypt benefits from a diversified economy, with strong contributions from tourism, Suez Canal revenues, and a growing industrial sector. However, high population growth and unemployment pose ongoing economic hurdles.

4. Djibouti ($26.6 per hour worked)
Djibouti’s strategic location along key global trade routes boosts its economy. The country relies on port services, logistics, and foreign investments, particularly from China, to drive productivity.

5. Eswatini ($25.0 per hour worked)
The small southern African nation of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) maintains relatively high productivity due to its strong manufacturing sector, particularly in textiles and sugar production.

6. Botswana ($23.8 per hour worked)
Botswana has leveraged its diamond mining industry to achieve stable economic growth. Good governance and prudent financial management have contributed to its strong labour productivity.

7. South Africa ($21.6 per hour worked)
As Africa’s most industrialized nation, South Africa has a diverse economy spanning mining, finance, and manufacturing. However, challenges such as energy shortages and high unemployment limit productivity gains.

8. Tunisia ($19.2 per hour worked)
Tunisia’s economy benefits from a well-developed industrial and service sector, including tourism. However, political instability and slow economic reforms have affected long-term growth.

9. Equatorial Guinea ($18.9 per hour worked)
With one of the highest GDPs per capita in Africa, Equatorial Guinea’s productivity is driven by oil exports. However, economic inequality remains a major issue due to reliance on a narrow economic base.

10. Namibia ($15.6 per hour worked)
Namibia’s economy is ed by mining (diamonds, uranium), agriculture, and a growing tourism sector. Despite a relatively small workforce, the country has managed steady productivity levels.

Nigeria is missing. Your drug baron and certificate forging crook said nah statistics we go chop have grounded your country'economy, but nah IPOB be your obsession as par zombie they must do the thinking for. So you now see how stats affect the growth of a country economy?

Sadly in 2015, the leadership of the country was taken over by a character that was not only clueless about the economy, he also had no interest in fixing it and as a result of this the economy of the country plummeted for eight straight years under his rudderless leadership.

The country had another opportunity in 2023 when a new leader was elected. Sadly hopes were dashed when another questionable character was imposed on the country under very dubious circumstances as president. The notorious "nah statistics we go chop" CSU certificate forger.

The resultant effect is that the country's economy has continued to plummet as a result of the mismanagement of the country's resources and the rudderless economic policies of the istration. From top to bottom. Fear APC!

Top 10 list of productivity in Africa, and Nigeria is not there?!!

In what positive aspect are we topping then?!!

What direction are we headed in this nation?!!

Na wa o!

Before Jonathan handed over, as badly as he performed, Nigeria was still one of the biggest and fastest growing economies in Africa.

Why will anyone expect Nigeria to be among the most productive countries in Africa when:

- Boko Haram is unleashing terror on the productive populace in the north

- Banditry also reigns supreme.

- IPOB and ESN killing, kidnapping, and maiming in the Southeast plus, Mondays sit-at-home.

- Lagos and Abuja the commercial and istrative capitals respectively, reek of vehicular traffic during peak periods.

I am not surprised at all!

They will soon do a magical rebasing that will tell you that our GDP is now over a trillion dollars.

In George Orwell's "Animal Farm" Squealer would "read out to them (the animals) lists of figures proving that production had increased by two hundred percent, three hundred percent, or five hundred percent."

Most Nigerians are not productive. The population is only huge for nothing. I attribute this to our poor educational system which does not encourage creativity and innovations. Countries listed in this report have better educational systems than Nigeria.

.. knowledge is power 💪

Namibia- my most favorite African country.
But most of this figures are not real.
I’ve been to Namibia and I can tell you they’re happy people not because they have money or earn a lot… They just choose to be happy, unlike Naija where even cat and dogs based their happiness on money.
All this figure be like when you ask UBA say how much them dey pay their staffs —- They will tell you the lowest is 530k.
Ask them about those contract workers and they will say they’re not their staffs…. While the contract staffs are 96% of their staff strength.
But all the same, Namibia is a very beautiful country and very accommodating.

The trash from IPOb retards.

What and what are the criteria, this is a trash list composed by super low IQ IPOb retard.
Nigeria is among the biggest and most productive economies in Africa.

It went down slightly due to restructuring but it will soon be the biggest.

When it gets back to the biggest, these IPOB zero IQ retards will dispute the information then or just be silent.

Don't be surprised if you don't see the name of one giant like that there..

It for three solid reasons:

1..Lack of vision by your leaders.. Zero planning. Zero vision. They are all in there for what they can get and not what they can give. This is the reason industries go moribund as seen in the Textile, Steel, Auto..industries, etc. A country of over 250million people wear clothes (new and secondhand); drive cars (new and secondhand); and build all its houses with steel; from other countries.

2..Oil which has made everyone lazy. Everyone wait cap-in-hand for FAAC allocation to collect and spend (on frivolities).

3..Your system of government. Coupled with the two factors above, we run an expensive Presidential system of government that focuses largely on consumption rather than production. A very large parliament that ensures they corner 25% of the national budget through bogus allowances and Constituency projects.

Indeed you can't give what you don't have.
