Even CAF hardly use AFCON as a criteria for winning African Player of the Year. Since i started watching football as a kid, I can't pinpoint a particular year that an APOY won the award because of their performance on the biggest tournament in African football.

Is AFCON a major tournament? Yes it is undoubtedly.

But is AFCON at the same level of COPA and Euros in of quality? Truthfully No.

The best teams in Afcon like Senegal and CIV are not even in the top 20 rated national teams globally. Meanwhile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and at least 7 top Euro teams are always in the top 10.

Objectively, the best of Afcon teams are below their level. So are their worst.
