“How Old Were You” – Farotimi Challenges X Over 1993 Election Annulment Debate. Prominent Nigerian lawyer and political commentator, Dele Farotimi, has ignited a discussion on historical awareness following his response to a social media ’s claim about the annulment of the 1993 presidential election. Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) , Farotimi challenged the assertion that both the military ruler who annulled the election and the Nigerian people who “chose to remain ive” afterward shared equal responsibility. The debate began when an X argued that culpability should be shared, insisting that neither the military leader nor the public acted in isolation and that, at the time, there was a collective acceptance of the situation. “Both the individual who annulled the election and the voters who chose to remain ive afterward are equally complicit and just as guilty as the one who initiated the annulment. We should stop this blame game, everyone consented at the time.” Farotimi, renowned for his critical views on governance and historical ability, swiftly dismissed this perspective, challenging the ’s grasp of Nigeria’s political history. His response, which has since gained significant traction, questioned the ’s familiarity with historical events, pointedly asking how old they were in 1993 to gauge their understanding of that era. He asserted that, based on their argument, it was clear the lacked historical knowledge and had a limited grasp of the subject they were attempting to discuss. “How old were you in 1993? I ask so that I may gauge your knowledge of the history of the time, because on the evidence of the question you have asked, you are clearly not a student of history, and you have very limited understanding of what you have presumed to speak about.” Source: https://www.okay.ng/how-old-were-you-farotimi-challenges-x--over-1993-election-annulment-debate/ 1 Like 2 Shares |

An average Nigerian will refuse to read books written by authors that did some research about an event at a time or after, but will choose to listen to tales by moonlight from one elder that sat in his corner many years of his life. This is the sad reality of the civil war, the events that led to it and its aftermath. 1 Like |

I am just wondering the kind of stories this current generations of young and old people will tell the generations then (60-70 years time). These are same people who will not even participate in voting during election-reason being that the results have written or without their votes winners must emerge. These are same people recycle hearsay stories filled with lies. In the next 60 years, a 40year old person would seen as elder and speaks out of experience . Na for where the experience come from? |

otipoju:No Binatone came at least 5 years after 1993. What we had then were aluminum tiger Torchlights and maybe some plastic ones, they there were small small radios but Binatone I doubt was in Nigeria by 1993. I may be wrong though. |

otipoju: That's not true. Binatone recharge lamp came out many years after. There was nothing like that in 1993. |

wizelink: Not their fault though, we scrapped history for years National building is not part of our educational syllabus So the government intentionally made this generation docile, so as to enforce themselves into power Now, the thing don backfire |

marsoden: You have a point. I may be wrong. The Binatone we had then was not like the one in the picture. It was slimmer and white. I this one was used a lot by students on campus then. If it came later, then you are still correct. This was 90's stuff...so memories are faint. One thing I know for sure though, DSTV was for the wealthy and there were no viewing centers then. |

Sheuns: I think this rubbish has to stop. You read 99 books that said yes it happened but there was no problem. 1 book decided to state otherwise and it's now a lie? What's the problem of an average Nigerian? Can there be different versions of the same story ? If you decide to believe on 99 books that said the same thing, it's fine. And if other people want to believe the only book that stated otherwise, is it a crime. You believed in book. Allow others to believe what they want to believe. You are no different or better than them. Or you don't you believe otherwise? |
